Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shae Bynes. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Shae, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
It was April 25, 2010 and I was in Orlando at a business conference. It was the last day of the event and I was ironing my clothes in the hotel room getting ready for the final session.
As I was ironing I heard the word “Go!” It wasn’t an audible voice, but it was really strong. I’d never experienced anything like that before in my life. It was ringing loudly in my ears and it was burning in my heart. I knew that it was a message from God and I knew exactly what it was about.
I’d been struggling with the idea of saying goodbye to a very comfortable high paying career with benefits to transition to full-time entrepreneurship. I’d been talking to my husband about it for several months and had a long list of reasons why I wasn’t properly prepared even though I was feeling a reoccurring internal tug that it was time. I was hoping and even praying that I’d get caught up in the department layoffs so that I could at least have year’s worth of severance pay, but I ended up with a promotion instead!
However, that morning while I was ironing my clothes, I felt like I received my marching orders. I remember looking up and saying something like “Lord, I know that’s you. So you’ve got my back, right?” (such a silly question!) and I felt so much peace.
The next day I called my boss and gave my 30-day notice, having no idea what adventure I was going to embark on. It was the first time I was willing to allow the voice of God (divine wisdom) to take priority over my own conflicting wisdom and circumstances.
While it took several years before I was able to personally pay myself a higher salary as the CEO of my own business than I was paid as a corporate employee, I have absolutely zero regrets. I stand in awe of all that has transpired since the day I took the risk and left my corporate career behind. I discovered my identity, true freedom, fulfilling work, and it has been one wild, crazy, and amazing adventure. This year, I’m celebrating the 10th anniversary of my business and the movement I co-founded called Kingdom Driven Entrepreneur. I’ve had a blast inspiring, teaching, mentoring, and advising entrepreneurs from around the globe, equipping them to be catalysts for transformation in the marketplace.
Shae, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a passionate storyteller, mentor, and strategist who ignites and equips leaders to be catalysts for transformation in their spheres of influence.
I’m Founder and Chief Fire Igniter of the Kingdom Driven Entrepreneur movement, and my most popular book “Grace Over Grind: How Grace Will Take Your Business Where Grinding Can’t” is shifting the way people live, work, and engage the world around them. Whether I’m sharing on platforms publicly or consulting with clients privately, you can expect me to deliver an abundance of truth with love, grace, and contagious joy.
I’ve been blessed to reach nearly one million aspiring and current entrepreneurs around the globe through my devotionals, books, courses, and podcast, providing inspiration and practical strategies for doing business in partnership with God and having a greater transformational impact in the lives of others.
On the personal side, I’m a native Floridian and have lived in nearly every major city within the state at some point of my life. I attended college at the University of South Florida (B.S. Computer Science) and the University of Florida (M.B.A. Management), and I call the Fort Lauderdale area home. I’m married to my high school sweetheart and mom to 3 beautiful daughters.
How’d you meet your business partner?
It was truly a series of what I called divinely orchestrated moments.
A little over 10 years ago, a friend and fellow real estate investor told me he met a woman that he really felt he needed to connect me to. He introduced us via email and we had a phone call.
During the call with her, it was an interesting conversation, but I couldn’t figure out why my friend initially felt so strongly about connecting us. At the end of our call, she said she has a client that she felt she should connect me to. She introduced us on Facebook.
A couple of weeks later I was on the phone for the first time with the woman who would become my co-founder and business partner just a few months later. Neither of us had any idea that our lives and businesses were about to completely change.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Authenticity and consistency have been the keys to growing our community over the past decade.
Authenticity:
We (me as well as our team) never try to create perceptions that aren’t based on reality (we consider that to be manipulation), and we actively live our own message out loud. When it was just me and my co-founder it was pretty simple to do this, but as the team grew it became increasingly important to focus on the culture so we could maintain that authenticity as a collective. We’re not perfect, but we continue to progress, and that’s what matters most.
Consistency:
Sharing our message consistently through our social media channels, e-mail newsletters, and podcast has certainly helped to build our reputation. We had to get better with shaping the message year over year, but we always showed up! I have also authored multiple books that share some of the core messages behind our movement and what we teach, mentor, and advise our community on.
