Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jacqueline Betton. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jacqueline, appreciate you joining us today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
I am very much happier as a business owner. I find it to be a thrill because I am experiencing new sides of myself throughout this entire process. Some days are great and some are not so great. However, I would change my mind about none of it. I’ve held regular jobs. Plenty of them. Honestly, it wasn’t until about 2019 that I really started understanding my grind and how I operated. I fired two jobs that year. Yes, I fired them. You know Voyage Magazine, a lot of us, when we aren’t aware of our own potential, tend to get sucked into society’s way of living. Before you know we, we’re conforming to an ongoing boring cycle. That’s what was going through my mind. Jumping from one job to another would have been the death of me if I let it. I knew for my sanity I had to move differently. I tend to take leaps of faith that people would consider me crazy for taking. But, betting on myself seems to be more of a win than a loss. Even if the outcome isn’t so great. I just learned something I’m either good/great at or, something I bever want to experience again. Then I smile and repeat.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hey, y’all hey y’all heyyyyy! First off Happy New Year! It’s such an honor to be back in the midst of greatness. Thank you for allowing me this space to share with the world my greatness as well. My name is Jacqueline Betton. I am known for my powerhouse vocals and songwriting skills and as of late, The SpeakLyfe Advocate and conduit between You and The Source. I am originally from Milwaukee, W, and am now an 8-year resident of Atlanta, GA. I am a conqueror of Domestic Abuse, Depression, and Low Self-Esteem. I am the creator of SpeakLyfe Worldwide, I host my own podcast entitled SpeakLyfe Talks. On my platform, I encourage people to own their dopeness while elevating their faith.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson that I had to unlearn would be it’s ok to let go. I spent years trying to prove myself to unworthy people. People who were dealing with their mess. I would compare myself to these people and overwork myself for their validation. Well, NOT TODAY! Baby, I will be 40 this year. I am so grateful for it. I’m excited. I spent my 20s in an abusive and controlling marriage to someone who saw me. Though we were in business together musically, he would have rathered kept me hidden. I spent my 30s up and down a rollercoaster of incomprehensible emotions, opportunities, homelessness, fake friends, and failed relationships. But I’ve also experienced true happiness, self-love, real women empowerment, accountability, self-forgiveness, and slowing down. Whew, I have been through some things. In all of these things. I’ve learned that when things and people no longer serve a purpose in my life- it’s imperative to remove them swiftly. That doesn’t mean I love them any less. I now understand what it is to love me so much more. I am now my top priority.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
For me, it’s been simple. I started going live on Facebook a few years back sharing briefly my life story. I never had a script or an outline of what the conversation would be about I would allow God and the conversations I would have with whoever I was speaking to would guide me. That really helped a lot because I was always great at singing to an audience, but I never really held conversations with them. With the brief conversations I would have, whether on Facebook or in person, our conversing time would always end with someone saying, ” You should have a podcast!” I heard that for one full year before finally launching SpeakLyfe Talks. Boy was I nervous. If you listen to the first couple of episodes you can tell lol. Overall, I built my audience by being truthful and reachable, engaging, and having fun. So if you’re looking to grow your audience BE YOU! Best advice you’ll ever receive. The game already has everybody else. Now it needs you.
