We were lucky to catch up with Melissa Harvey recently and have shared our conversation below.
Melissa, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you tell us a story about a time you failed?
Lash year I expanded my business by making a branch off for event planning. During the height of Covid I hosted a virtual ladies night. I shipped boxes with a custom cocktail glass, custom shaker, and supplies to make a signature drink that my business sells. We had a Pure Romance consultant join us and we played games all from the comfort of our own homes. It was successful, a lot of fun, and the ladies had been asking for it again. Recently I decided to do it but wanted to switch it up a little. I tagged in a sex coach and sent out the boxes again only this time a little different. I called it an open forum sex talk and decided to have in person AND virtual together at the same time. It was an epic fail! Everything that could go wrong did. It was an awful experience for me and ultimately paused long term plans that I had for that part of the business. I’m still at the drawing board trying to figure out how to turn it around honestly . But overall it was a lesson learned and I now know what I don’t want.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My original and first business is named Mystical Moments & Events. It’s been in business for 8 years! It started in New York and then in 2018 I relocated to metro Atlanta and restarted the business here. I make custom cakes and desserts. Everything is made to order so there is no regular menu. Last year I expanded it out to party/event planning as well and opened a branch off called Mystical Moments & Events in events. We started out with backyard movie night set ups, bubble tent rentals, champagne wall rentals, and photo booths . There’s more to come in 2023!

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Word of mouth! That is literally the best source of new clients . Tell a friend to tell a friend is key! My business always gets new bursts of clientele when someone new tries something they heard about and then they post about it on social media. Or if they’ve come to an event I’m at and have something and post /talk about it.

How did you build your audience on social media?
The following I have on my business Facebook and Instagram are majority from sponsored adds, hashtag followings, and through return following from other business owners. I’d say take the chance and do the sponsored add when just starting out. They aren’t overly expensive and it will get you seen in your area!
