We were lucky to catch up with Ana Gabriela Avila Acosta recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ana Gabriela, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you share a story about the kindest thing someone has done for you and why it mattered so much or was so meaningful to you?
Believing in me. That’s the kindest thing someone’s ever done for me, my family, my mother, my sister, and Carlos, my partner at the time. Also, all the teachers, friends, students, and the general public believed in what I was doing, despite the implications, breaking paradigms and stereotypes that we live with. I think that’s the best thing someone can get from others.
Ana Gabriela, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was introduced to what we call “The Arts of the Night”, all the burlesque and cabaret stuff around the age of 15, and just fell in love with it, it was my secret passion and well, here I am now, with a lot of effort and support you can in some way make your dreams come true. I went to college in Tijuana where I was able to research the subject and how cabaret and burlesque have existed in our society, then I started a company with the intention of producing photography and performance events. At the moment I’m doing a Master’s in Theater and Performance arts with the goal of continuing to provide a safe space for artists who specialize in this type of entertainment. We’ve performed and had other participations at national festivals in Mexico and currently make a lot of productions at Cine Libertad Tijuana, like BuCa Fest, a yearly Burlesque and Cabaret Festival, and we’re inviting national and international artists to not just perform but also to get to know our city. Our company is called “Di Notte Nel Cabaret” and our main focus is to promote female empowerment and LGBTQIA+ inclusion. We’re always promoting our shows, doing ticket sales, and merchandise like calendars, t-shirts, stickers, etc. in order to fund and get better equipment to bring the public the best show possible. I’m currently teaching an Intro to Burlesque class and have had a great response, my students have embraced their sensuality through activities that go beyond the exposure of the body as it is generally perceived, we also have some Master Classes coming in the near future so our performers can share their knowledge and experience in the business.
Is there a mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, we’re working on obtaining funds to open our own school of performing arts and night entertainment, so if anyone is interested in being a sponsor/partner please contact us through our socials or via email at [email protected]
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Art has never been a priority in our society, we’re all aware of this, so if you’ve never been in close contact with it, I totally recommend you to find music, dance, theater, or a painting you really love or that evokes some kind of feeling in you and BUY IT! Or make it, leave your comfort zone because LIFE IS A CABARET! We only live once and believe me, you need to try everything you can.
