We recently connected with Brittany Sigler and have shared our conversation below.
Brittany, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think it takes to be successful?
It takes many actions to be successful. In my opinion, success takes sacrifice, discipline, and time. You have to be willing to push yourself when no one else is cheering you on. It is that little voice inside of you that drives you to be disciplined and stay the course even when you aren’t reaping the benefits of your efforts right away, you stick with it and tell yourself to keep going. You have a dream and nothing is going to stop that. Time is also a huge contributor because regardless of what anyone says, you’re always going to put more time in your craft than what you think in the beginning and then also the “trial and error” stage of learning how exactly your business is going to tick and tock. You have to be willing to take risks and understand that it may (or may not) work out on the first try, but yet you learned and you got better! ANd then the growth just takes time. Baby steps turn into big steps and then you begin, over time, to have more faith in your mission along with faith in yourself.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have always had a passion for beauty and skincare, even at an early age. As young as age 10, I was asking my family members if I could paint their nails just for fun and my sister and I would play “spa” and give each other facials and pedicures. As I became a teenager I was aboslutely enamered with makeup, begging my mom and grandmother to take me to the “makeup counter’ (as Ulta and Sephora didn’t yet exist) and I could stay there for hours. Watching all the beautiful women and being surrounded by that sparked my interest and I knew I wanted to learn more! All of my friends would want me to do their makeup and it made me so happy. There was something so gratifying about making someone feel so pretty on the inside and out. Once I turned 18, I decided I was going to college to be a teacher. I didn’t really know what I wanted to do. I knew I needed a part time job so I tried for SIX MONTHS to work at one of the makeup counters and then I finally landed a job at Estee Lauder and I soon realized that this was my destiny. Halfway through college, I wanted to quit but I finished to get my degree and literally the week I got my degree, I took a travelling position with Estee Lauder. I ended up spending a good 8 years with the company where I learned so much that shaped me to who I am today. It was the foundation I needed. I learned not only about makeup but also about business and then coaching a team once I became over a territory as an Account Coordinator.
After travelling for a few years, Sephora popped up in our town and I wanted to branch out and learn more about various brands and trends in the industry. I applied for a Store Director position and was offered the job just a few days later. It opened up an entire new world today and little did I know it was just the path I needed to continue my journey and better equip myself to create my own bridal beauty business.
After about 5 years of working for Sephora and a marriage at the beach (Yes, Destin, Florida), we decided we wanted to take the plunge and move to the same area we got married so I could pursue my dream of being a mobile bridal beauty artist and creating a unique concept for my vision of a mobile bridal beauty team/company, Yes, I was so scared and nervous, but yet so excited all at the same time!
Our house sold within one month and here we were in a new town with no “real job” and just a dream of “Destin Mobile Makeup Box” that I wanted so bad to become a reality. I am not going to lie..it was hard. This is where the discipline came in and the strength to press on when you don’t really reap the rewards–both mental and tangible. There were many days I doubted, cried, and was just plain frustrated yet the passion for what I was doing basically superseded all the fear and uncertainty. And that’s when I knew I was determined to make it happen. There was a time when I worked 4 jobs in hopes that one day I could do my bridal beauty business full time. With lots of prayer, persistance, and time, little by little, I began to build a beauty business that I was proud of and I began to hire a few artists to work alongside of me.
Fast forward to 7 years, and here we are today! I am most proud of what I have built in this industry with my team. We all have one common goal and that is to make our brides look and feel the most beautiful on their wedding day when it comes to their hair and makeup experience! We are able to service our Emerald Coast area along the panhandle of Florida and even into Gulf Shores, Alabama! We have a team of 15 artists and we are committed to giving our clients a luxury bridal beauty experience in the comfort of their own home or venue on their wedding day! We strive to best the best in the industry by exceeding our brides expectations by doing continuing education and staying informed with the latest bridal beauty trends and styles. We offer on-location bridal hair and makeup services, along with sunless tanning through Destin/30a Luxe Mobile Tan (our sister company) and we have high hopes to offer bridal party experiences such as facials and spa days coming soon as we expand!
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
We are extremely proud of our social media presence as all of our followers are organic and we pride ourselves in this! We love posting and showing off our work on social media and creating a “lifestyle” with our social media so our brides can see us in the day to day life and also view various styles and looks when it comes to bridal beauty! It is also so important for each artist on the team to have their own social media outlets so our clients can view their work and see that they have options. The best advice I can give is to someone starting out with social media is quality over quantity. It is better to have more quality content than more photos that don’t really do your business justice. And as your business grows and your budget allows, I highly recommend hiring a social media manager that can help you, as a business owner, as this can be another job within itself but yet so incredibly important as people are more tech savy than ever before!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Building our reputation in the market is something that does not happen overnight. It took alot of time to meet vendors in the area and let them know what we have to offer. And even then, they have to refer us and believe we are going to follow through and this takes time and commitment. Our reputation is everything as we have many wedding vendors that put their trust in us to take care of their brides when it comes to the beauty and on location services. Maintaining those relationships through trust and also a good partnership are crucial. Another huge part of our reputation is our reviews. It takes many years and hard work to build your reivew platform but that is also something that I am proud of when it comes to our team. Since we live in a tourist town, reviews are read almost every day and it does reflect on our reputation as many pf our brides are booking from out of state and can only rely on word of mouth.
