We recently connected with Chelsea Campbell and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Chelsea thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I am more of a visual and tactile-kinesthetic type of learner and I also like to learn from a variety of perspectives. So, my approach to learning about candle-making was no different. I spent countless hours watching Youtube videos, and my favorite method, trial-and-error. I also learned a great amount of information from reading Candle-Making books, blogs, and forums. However, candle-making is not an exact science, or a one size fits all. It’s more like finding the balance between science and art. This is why trial-and-error has been the greatest teacher for me when it comes to learning the craft. Candle-making requires patience, perseverance and determination. There are many factors that could affect the quality and the burn of a candle during the candle making process. It can be easy to give up after several “bad batches” (trust me, I’ve been there!), but perseverance through the challenges is rewarded with results. Not just with candle-making, but with any craft or task.
As far as learning poetry, I took a few writing classes throughout the years. However, I’ve mostly practiced the craft by practicing the craft–writing frequently, using writing prompts and challenges, and joining writing groups, etc.
Chelsea, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My candle-making journey began with my love and adoration for scents, specifically scented candles. That love turned into curiosity which led me to learning about the craft and adopting it as a hobby. That hobby is now a growing business that assists me in living out my mission, which is to provide quality products and share my creativity in a way that is inspiring and uplifting. One way that I share my creativity, is through my poetry. Each of my natural, soy wax candles also comes with an affirmation haiku poem that I’ve written. I believe this is what sets Soyful Scents apart from the average candle company. For those that are unfamiliar, traditionally, haikus are short poems, consisting of three lines that follows a 5-7-5 syllable pattern. I put my personal spin on the traditional haiku and began creating affirmative and uplifting poems that also follow the 5-7-5 pattern. I absolutely love writing haikus, both traditional form and my remixed form. I appreciate the challenge and excitement of getting what I need to say out in just 17 syllables.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I truly believe that our creative gifts are meant to be shared with others, not to be hoarded selfishly. So for me, the most rewarding parts of being a creative and entrepreneur are seeing my ideas and creations take physical form and to have them bring joy, comfort, inspiration or love to another.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I believe my mission in my creative journey, and life in general, is to be a beacon of love and to inspire others. In order to do live out that mission I have to be vulnerable and comfortable with sharing my story, my creations, my art, and my thoughts with others. When I go to create, my main goal is to express myself authentically, with the hopes that whatever I produce can resonate and/or uplift someone else in their journey.
