We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brittany Marie. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brittany below.
Brittany, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I’ve been singing since I could talk. But in 3rd grade, I had a music teacher named Mr. Moore who sent me home with an envelope for my mom. My mom gave it back to me the next day to give back to Mr. Moore. Before you know it, I was auditioning for Performing Arts and I got in. Going to an arts school exposed me to so many genres and styles of music. During my 8 years there, I studied classical, contemporary, jazz, opera, and everything in between. My teachers taught me how to compose music for voice and other instruments. Having that musical adaptability has helped me tremendously in finding my own voice and style. It keeps my music from becoming monotonous and safe. Not being able to afford college was the only thing that kept me from expanding more. Instead, I started learning on my own by studying materials I could find online and continuing my vocal exercises using youtube videos.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Brittany Marie. I chose to use my real name because I’m not a character. I use my music to tell real stories about my life and experiences. I composed my first song when I was 9 and have been creating music ever since. I write music, record music, and even spent some time producing tracks. I also headline a band and create live performance experiences. Live performing with Sound The Alarm Music Group is actually how I got back into music after taking time off. I make R&B/neo-soul music and every now and then dabble in the hip hop/rap arena. The difference between me and the others? The work ethic. The attention to detail. The way that I write. The range. No one can place expectations on me because I do what I want. I make my music for other people to know that it’s possible to live the exact life you want. I am most proud of the journey I’ve taken to get here. I didn’t always take the straight or easy path through but the detours created the stories you hear today.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The biggest lesson I had to unlearn was that I wasn’t good enough. I can’t even remember who taught me that I wasn’t. I didn’t start to think I wasn’t good enough until I became an adult. Other people will place their fears and insecurities on to you without you even realizing it. Over the years I’ve been told to wait my turn; stay in my lane. Even now, there are people I thought would be my biggest supporters who say maybe the world isn’t ready to hear my type of music. But how can that be when it’s just the story of my life? Social media doesn’t make it any easier. To constantly see and subconciously compare yourself to millions of other people can really drain you.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
My favorite part about being an artist is creating with other artists. Merging two stories, two lives, two styles. Finding the parallel path between their life and mine. I enjoy helping others find their voice. Their sound. I want to be the support that I didn’t have fighting my way here. I want other artists to know they are seen and it is their turn. I like being a trail blazer. Artists need to understand that we are stronger together and in numbers. We make our art for those who feel like they’re alone. I love when people tell me how my songs impact their lives and how my words relate to their stories.
