We were lucky to catch up with John MF Davis recently and have shared our conversation below.
John, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
Growing up, there’s often so much going on around you. Everyone has different goals and plans, inspirations and motivations. It makes you question yourself and this big burning question of “who are you” arises. This happened to me, and when I look at my life, I wasn’t happy with my situation. I became depressed and anxious, angry at mistakes I made in the past and worried so much about my future and it drove my to a crippling state of fear. I then heard the quote that anxiety comes from worry about the future and depression comes from worrying about the past. The first thing that popped into my head was then, I’ll only be happy if I focus on the now, there’s no place I’d rather be than BEING HERE DOING THIS.
John, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I played basketball growing up and a big part of basketball is the sneaker culture. I was always in love with sneakers and when I had the thought to design my own sneaker, I looked at the more popular designers at the time and they were all from the clothing industry. I then realized that’s where I must start. Got online did some research and hopped in the deep end.
I’m most proud of the fact that a kid who couldn’t draw, paint and didn’t see himself as creative, has now found a lane to express creativity and built a brand around it.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
I started with drop-shipping. No money down, little to no risk. And it worked well until I couldn’t produce all the different designs I wanted to make. I then spent $300 I had saved up from working my first job at Blaze Pizza. the first few years I worked and Blaze pizza and several other jobs just to pay my bills and let every dollar made from the brand stay into the brand. 3 years later, I was able to quit working for other and focus solely on MY company.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Being genuine. I treat all of my clients like family. Responding to any messages or comments as if they were truly a relative. Asking about how their lives are going, truly trying to integrate the brand message of living in and appreciating the moment with every conversation. Being open with my struggles and my growth.
Also with growth in the quality of products. Every release we try to get better and better with each step of the process. From marketing to materials to presentation.
