We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dr. Sara Zwink. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sara below.
Alright, Dr. Zwink thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
I lost my mom in October of 2022 to ALS. I’m 30, she was 63, and we had finally found our groove of the mother-daughter relationship in these past few years. Like many, I have ideas of what my parents did right and wrong during my childhood, but something that really stands out is one thing my mom taught me as an adult. When I lived at home during undergrad and would be heading to class or work, she’d say “bless those people!” as I walked out the door. Now, to know my mom was to know a very private woman from Niagara Falls, NY. – this was not the “bless those people” from a sweet Southern mama. When my mom said it, it was slightly out of character for her – but if there’s one thing she wanted her kids to be it was to be kind. To be a light in whatever room we entered. I’ve taken that with me everywhere – to job interviews, to board exams where I’d walk into the room telling myself “I’m just going to love on these people” as I’d be ask to perform auscultation of the heart or lumbar orthopedic tests. And I know that it helped me pass. It helped relax my nervous system as I focused on being a source of love, so that my brain could retrieve the testing material I actually needed. It’s what I tell myself as I walk into the room with a patient every time – I’m here to bless this person. I’m here to be love.
On my mom’s last day, we had a heart-to-heart (okay, I broke down crying and she used all her effort to say a few words) and at one point I asked “what’s the point to this whole thing [life]?!” and she simply, yet strenuously said “Love.”
So that’s that. That’s what I base every decision of my life off of now. Every interaction, every meeting, every patient, every boss. Love is the answer. When you bring that genuine energy with you, you cannot lose.
Sara, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
You know those people, many of us women, who seem like they can’t get a break from their anxiety? Maybe they have gut issues or a chronic illness that at this point rules their entire life – well, I help them find the care and answers they deserve. In fact, I was one of those women — my anxiety attacks started at age 8, from seemingly “nothing” but they continued, usually trigged by “nothing”, until my early 20s. Until I started taking care of my nervous system. Now, I help others do the same. I spent most of my 20s in school, getting my doctorate in chiropractic – all because of a job I had when I was twenty at a chiropractic office. This job took me, a total chiro skeptic, and taught me first hand how it transformed peoples’ lives and honestly got them their life back. Many of these people had come to this office as a final hope, only to find it was what they were ultimately looking for all along. After working there, I simply knew I had to offer the same with my life.
And so I do. I help people get out of chronic “fight and flight” get to a place of nervous system regulation where not only do they often find healing they may have given up on, but they get empowered in knowing their own body and healing potential both physically and mentally. Those who come into our office note that we’re not the same as most chiropractic offices – we’re conservative with our care, we only address the top two bones of your spine, we utilize a functional nervous system scan every visit, and take motion x-rays at the start so we know exactly what we’re dealing with. We also will swear and cry with our patients when they need it, and tell them we love them on the way out. We’re not here to give the same experience you’ll find elsewhere – we’re here to help fulfill the hope you have lost and find the life of ease you deserve.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
It wasn’t until I was getting my doctorate that people I met introduced me to the concept of one’s “money mindset” or your relationship with money. I had no idea just how deep our beliefs run, how many areas of life they affect, and how abundant life truly could be if you’re looking for it. Not even simply in regards to material or financial areas – but to life as a whole. Reading “The Little Money Bible” by Stuart Wilde helped me to shift my perspective towards money and abundance to an energetic one – one that can flow and come and go and be exactly what I needed it to be based off of my own definition of success. From a service provider standpoint, “None of Your Business” by Drs. Shawn Dill and Lacey Book greatly impacted how I imagined I had to market myself, how to interact with people, and it allowed me to be empowered to do things differently than the rest of my colleagues. Both these books I’ve read multiple times and am consistently suggesting to others.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Authenticity. There is so much “fake” in the professional world – we’re all just humans trying to figure it out. Even those of us who feel confident in what we offer still have endless amounts to learn. Now, I’m thankful I have the privilege of being in private practice so I don’t navigate the same intensity of corporate standards – but I’m still a professional, one in the healthcare field at that. What myself and our team finds, however, is that you are able to connect better, faster, and deeper with others when you don’t try to be anything that you’re not. When you let down the veil of the expected decorum for your field and show up with love, with a listening ear, with true intention to help. Some of the most educated people I know don’t know how to value another human, and some of the kindest and most successful people I know struggled to graduate high school. Leave your ego at the door, that’s the best way to truly help others.
