We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sabina Gordon. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sabina below.
Sabina, appreciate you joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
Watching my father’s life journey has taught me two things, perseverance and grit. Growing up in the Caribbean, I watched my father build his dream life from nothing. My father had only a 5th grade education, the only child of his mother, who could not afford to send him to school (in the Caribbean you have to pay for school from birth until). He worked to help his mom and at the age of 19 he taught himself how to sew by watching the neighborhood tailors in his community. My father showed me what it means to be resilient in the face of adversity, kind in the face of uncertainty and brave in the face of life’s continuous challenges. My mother left me to live with my dad at the age of 2 while she migrated to the USA. My father and I lived a very tiny room where I slept on our twin bed and he on the floor, and shared an outside communal bathroom. For years, I would watch my father work tirelessly all night until the morning sewing uniforms for the neighborhood children. All while sacrificing at every turn, he never ever complains. Selflessness was ingrained in his every act, to everyone he met. Eventually with all his hard work he was able to build our very own first home, he was so proud and I was so proud of him. After a few more years and some more hard work and sacrifices, my father not only had his tailoring business but he was able to make good on his dream of opening his own dry cleaning business. My father taught me the value of hard work and perseverance. He relied on prayer for strength and stability, this mental equilibrium is what helps in life’s ups and downs. He continues to be my biggest supporter and encourager, reminding me how to mINTin work, school and family harmony.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hello everyone. My name is Sabina Gordon, I am a board certified Family Nurse Practitioner. I am dermatology trained which is how I transitioned into my own business. My background as a RN is in ICU and when I graduated as an NP I was blessed to immediately get hired into Dermatology which is where my passion for skin evolved and where I learned a great deal. This year in April will make 2 years since I have started my own business Kulani Spa & Wellness. We are a spa & wellness center located in Stockbridge GA. We offer dermatology and skin rejuvenation services such as mole removals, laser services, various customized facials, chemical peels, microneedling, dermaplaning, and microdermabrasion. We also help with hair loss by way of platelet rich plasma. Next month we will be introducing IV hydration services, and in 2 months we will have medical supervised weight loss as well. We have medical grade skincare products as well as handmade, homemade, vegan natural body products. We are a growing day spa that strives to create an atmosphere of comfort and bliss. Whether someone is coming for their first facial or is looking to create a healthy skin regimen, I have something to offer. Some folks may feel like they have to live with ears of dermatology moles or skin tags but I remove these on a day to day basis. If you suffer from persistent acne, I have years of dermatology experience and will work on a treatment Plan that would work to ensure the best results. After working in Dermatology for a number of years I realized I have a passion for skin and helping women and men fall in love with their skin again. My goal is to bring out the “reflection of your inner perfection” as our slogan says. Meaning that this is not just about getting pampered on a regular basis but about truly offering a space and services that will help our clients to embrace their beauty inside and out. I want our potential clients to know that my business is not a one size fits all business, I truly cater to my clients individual needs. I’m also not looking for a one time client, I look to build lasting relationships.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
This question is ironic because I initially sought out to be a Physical Therapist. I just knew that’s what I was meant to be and where my passion lies. How did I end up in nursing? I had a child young and I thought to my myself, If I go and complete this Licensed Practical Nurse certificate, I will always have a job while I am going to school to purse Physical Therapy. So I did just that, finished LPN program and was working as a nurse and you guessed it, I LOVED IT. I continued to climb the nursing ladder until I stopped at my goal of being a Nurse Practitioner. Nursing is so rewarding, it does not come without it’s ups and downs and sometimes it is a thankless job but in the grand scheme of things, If I was not in nursing, I honestly do not know what else I would do. For me, the most rewarding thing I have found since being a nurse is the personal connection I am able to make with my patients, more now as a Nurse Practitioner than as. RN. No matter how long it’s been, a patient always remembers their nurse. so yes, If I could do it all over again, I would choose nursing again.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
I believe high morale has to start at the leadership level, with me being the business owner. I have to portray the characteristics of a good leader, such as integrity, and respect, It also helps to understand as a collective, your teams strengths, weaknesses, and the dynamics that drive the way they work together. I believe in celebrating your team’s achievements, give them continuous feedback, communicate with expectations, and involve the employees as equal members of your team. I start my day with meditation, gratitude and motivation, so I can come in and motivate my team.
