We recently connected with Cassandra Baker and have shared our conversation below.
Cassandra, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
Being a parent is not easy as I see for myself as a mother, so I can’t say there’s a book on parenting because everyone life is different and we all are different in many ways! So I would say that the best thing that my parents did for me was have me! Let me explain, in my younger years I never knew what I wanted or what I wanted to do! I would experiment really to see what I like and dislike, by my parents having me they gave me an opportunity to make a difference in my family life, as though we all make mistakes as well as having test and trails, I as well as my other siblings are very unique and with diversity we make life meaningful! This is why I am going to keep pushing hard for my parents (Charles & Rita Coleman) may they RIP and my family because we are the legacy no matter what and I want it to continue!
Cassandra, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have been in the industry for quite some years as an actress doing extra work and features, nonetheless discovering the art of rapping was always intriguing to me! The flow, sound and beat makes a big difference in music and I felt that I wanted to learn more about the craft! Once I finally learned that, it’s different types of rappers, I wanted to become just that! At first now, I didn’t think I could do it! I would try to come up with lyrics to beats and messed up badly! But I kept going and going and going and is still GOING. I was assisted and helped with lyrics and beats by my husband, who is also a Rap Artist (NLBU Slim) who is one of my biggest support system! My friends and family supports me and it made me feel very good that I learned how to flow and present myself as a Female Rap Artist! I honestly feel like it takes time to learn and master something so passionate! I appreciate the learning process and you can never speed up a craft you just get better and better! I believe by being an actress helped me be who I am as a rapper! I feel if I can learn lines to a script I can with lyrics to a beat! Although, nothing is ever easy, I believe not having the full support at the beginning of my process as a rapper was an obstacle and I say this ONLY because you must have the mental ability to be in the industry! It’s tough sometimes especially when others are in competition, not knowing “we can all eat together”! Once people realize this the better!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I was in my early twenties when I got in the Entertainment Industry! I started acting in plays, then got booked for extra work! Then as time went on I met my husband who was making music himself and I was so interested in what he was doing! He was so passionate about his craft and loved it! I love him, so I felt like I wanted that connection to just to feel what makes him happy! So fast forward we started doing music together and here we are today PinkLash and NLBU Slim and all our music is on all platforms! One difficult thing about this adventure in the industry is not giving up! I say this, because there are ups and downs in this industry and you got to put in the work if you really want it! Some people take you serious and others, well let just say the ones who don’t take you serious will regret it in the long run! What makes me different is that I’m weird lol! Let me explain, I am not the normal artist, my style, my personality and my beliefs are all of a combination that makes me who I am and what that consist of is determined, dedicated and strong minded! I am a go getter who won’’t stop until I complete my goal! I am most proud of the fact that I didn’t let negativity stop me and I am also proud of all the artist and entertainers that’s pushing and doing their thing! SALUTE
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Not really, because in life things are merely learned from experience and ups and downs! I know there are millions of books and information about how to master or learn something, but I learned better from experience then reading or watching it! Life is our teacher and experience is our resolution! I say keep pushing and NEVER GIVE UP!!!!!
