We were lucky to catch up with Brooklen Farley recently and have shared our conversation below.
Brooklen, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
Before Kind Body Therapy became a mobile massage practice, my co-creator, Morgan Goree, and I spent a few months brainstorming the purpose of Kind Body Therapy and what we want our practice to look like in 5 to 10 years. Through that process, we developed the philosophy of wanting to help people manage their chronic stress and pain through massage therapy and chiropractic care. I currently run the brand and practice, while Morgan is finishing his doctorate in chiropractic.
With that vision, in November of 2021, we created the online portion of Kind Body Therapy, sharing content about simple self-care hacks, light stretches, and bodywork videos. That community has grown to over one thousand supporters across platforms and continues to expand. In September of 2022, we filed the LLC for Kind Body Therapy and started the journey of entrepreneurship.
The most challenging part of starting a practice has been letting fear of failure get in the way of progress. There are things I personally stressed over or shot down because I allowed perfectionism to exist in the driver’s seat. That being said, I think every step of this process has happened the way it has for a reason, and the only thing I would change is trusting the vision and having patience sooner.
There are things you can do as a responsible business owner i.e., paying your taxes, keeping your certifications up to date, etc. But in my opinion, you cannot control most things that will come your way, so I would advise anyone looking to start a practice to believe in your vision, do your research, and have incredible patience throughout your journey.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Kind Body Therapy is an online wellness community and mobile massage practice based in Dallas, Texas. We offer chair massage for private parties, retreats, and other collaborative experiences. We also provide massage therapy, cupping, and light aromatherapy with our signature restorative relaxation massage, which is aimed at addressing the chronic stress and body tension most people deal with daily.
Stress management is a core part of our mission, as chronic stress contributes to sleeplessness, irritability, and other long-term health issues if left untreated. Because of this, we want our followers and clients to learn new ways to practice intentional relaxation online and in their personal lives, as a way to combat the harsh impacts of grind culture. Our content seeks to remind people about the power of slowing down in our “grind-or-die” society, while our massage services help create a space for relaxation in our clients’ homes, workplaces, and community gatherings.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Other than training, you must have strong boundaries to be successful in the bodywork field. You are constantly giving your energy and using your physical body to complete every service, so you have to know and honor your limits. It is hard at times, especially when you are just starting the career because you want to take every opportunity to network and be seen by the right people, but it is important to have discernment when choosing which clients or events to take on.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
I would likely choose the same profession if I could start over, although I did choose massage therapy shortly after graduating from college. I am happy that I took a gap year to explore other options and decide what I wanted to pursue, and I think that had a large impact on choosing this path.
