Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Bella Brown. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Bella, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you’ve thought about whether to sign with an agent or manager?
Yes I am currently signed with an agency based in California. I started off with a manager, but him and I had different directions I wanted my career as an actress to go. So we parted ways. My current agent found me on Backstage. I had 2 interviews with her and we decided to move forward with a contract. I decided to work with her because she was a black woman, who shared the same spiritual beliefs as me and she had a reputable resume. I believe she chose to work with me because she thought I had a different look from her other clients and she believes in my work!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve been professionally acting for 7 years. I’ve always loved playing dress up and emulating scenes from movies as a kid lol. I decided to take my natural talent and nourish it. I got my BA in theatre with a concentration in performance. I’ve had the pleasure of studying under DFW’s top coaches. Have had the opportunity to have virtual classes with Taye Diggs during the pandemic. The more I learn about my craft, I realize how much I don’t know lol. That’s the beauty about of my profession so many different techniques and ways to connect to your character and tell their story. My last film I did was a short film titled “Sisters” and I played a psychopath. Man that was a crazy experience, I had to take a week off after filming to decompress. That film is in post-production so hopefully it comes out this year. I have another short I am in titled “The Cure” and it’s making its rounds in the film festival circuit now! I had so much fun filming that film, it was a poetic love story. I’ve honestly have had the pleasure to work on a plethora of independent films in DFW! Im looking forward to work with more and continue to broaden my work in different regions!
Have you ever had to pivot?
I quit my corporate job 7 years ago when I decided to pursue my acting career full time. It’s been a roller coaster. This year it seemed jobs slowed down and I had zero dollars coming in. I felt like a failure because going back to the corporate world meant being a full time actress didn’t work, but that was a lie. It did work, it does work but working a 9-5 was just survival not failure. I applied to be a theatre teacher at a middle school. That’s my pivot and I’m enjoying but don’t think I’ll be able to do it another year lol. Shoutout to all the educators out there!!!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect for me is learning new perspectives that I otherwise wouldn’t have, if i didn’t get to tell these stories through someone else’s point of view.
