We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Catalina Gomez-Beuth a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Catalina, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
“Resilience in Times of Resistance” was an introspective art exhibit that recounted a time we never thought we’d live through (pandemic time). The silent, abstract days we hoped would go by quickly pierced into our essence as social creatures, compelling us to look deep within ourselves. Seeing children go through these times that defied explanation inspired me to create a series of paintings that show us the quiet, contemplative state I witnessed in my own children, and their power of endurance. Out of uncertainty, anguish, and self-reflection, they have spawned infinite possibilities. I wanted to capture these moments of introspection, giving us hope for the future.

Catalina, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Far from being a decorative element, my work is created to match the soul of those who appreciates it. I describe myself as an artist who captures the feelings of souls. Through my art, I narrate with brush strokes in people’s faces each person’s individuality, avoiding boundaries created by skin color. This is why all my characters are expressed in various shades of gray, by emphasizing the gestures of the subject surrounded by vibrant colors. My work goes beyond the portrait itself as my intention is to reflect emotions.
States of life, current events, and my own experiences are great influence in my work.
I recognize that fear and admiration are part of the inspiration for my creations. I remain in constant search to keep evolving as an artist, experimenting with new elements and materials that help me express what I hold in my heart through my hands. The art studio in my home has become a gallery that lives and breathes art in different stages.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My mission as an artist is to create experiences where the encounter between the viewer and the artwork generates a deep and reflective connection that balms the spirit and counteracts the negative around them.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Art has brought into my life wonderful people and incredible human connections that inspire me to keep on creating. Doing what I love, sharing it with the world, and realizing that they connect with my art, it is the most rewarding experience.
