We recently connected with Alexis Lozoria and have shared our conversation below.
Alexis, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. One of our favorite things to hear about is stories around the nicest thing someone has done for someone else – what’s the nicest thing someone has ever done for you?
I have many people who support my small business. Anytime I have a pop-up I am so grateful to see familiar faces and even more thankful that people make the drive to come see me and purchase my treats. Out of all the familiar faces that I get to see, one stands out the most. Kim Montano is my partner’s highschool friend and since the beginning of my small business journey she has always showed up to my pop up events with her sister and daughter. The last pop up event I had was during the holiday season in Pegasus Plaza and to be honest I was not expecting to see many familiar faces because it was a cold day.
Kim Montano ends up surprising us and brings along her mother, Madeline Cruz. Madeline owns two businesses in Lake Dallas, The Enchanted Gift Shop and Lake Dallas Mercantile which are gift shops that have a variety of gifts from local vendors all under one roof. Madeline invites me to her shop that night and asks if I would like to have a pop-up as Lake Dallas was going to have their holiday parade that night. I agreed and later that night showed up with my treats and she already had a table set up for me.
Madeline and her family were so welcoming. I remember feeling so much love and support that day. I got a tour of both of their shops and met some of the local vendors and learned about their family bussiness. At the end of the night, Madeline offered me the opportunity to become a vendor at her shop and I remember just being over moon thankful for this opportunity. I remember her saying “I want to help you and your bussiness”, and that is about the kindest thing anyone could do for me. Madeline and her family are truly the kindest people I have ever met.

Alexis, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi My name is Alexis Lozoria and I am a cake and cookie artist. Ever since I was a kid I was into baking shows and it wasn’t until after high school that I decided to go to culinary school and I got my Associates of Science in Pastry Arts. After graduating I had been given the opportunity to be a lead cake decorator at a bakery in Frisco, TX. I have helped work bridal shows around the DFW area, create cakes for local politicians, and even for family members of several NFL players. I learned a lot working at the local bakery in Frisco, and have the experience that I have now because of them.
I left my job in 2019 after I had my daughter so that I can focus on the things that motherhood had to offer me. In 2020, I would get requests from family members and friends to make cakes for their special celebrations and I would immediately say YES, because the decorative side of baking is something that I love to do. Every cake is a new project that I get to bring to life that will make someone happy on their special day.
I did a lot of trial and error trying to decide what I wanted to focus on as far as treats but custom cakes and decorated iced sugar cookies is what I decided to stick on. I also like to create bento box cakes, which are personal cakes in a bento box and vintage heart cakes which are really popular right now.
I think sometimes it can be difficult to keep up with all the cake trends because there’s always something new and to learn but this is also what makes my job fun because I am always learning new things and practicing! One thing I want my customers to know is that there is always love put into the work that I do and thanks to them I get to do what I love everyday and it never feels like work.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
In 2019 I decided to leave my job to focus on motherhood after my daughter Melanie was born. I was no longer employed and I was definitely not looking for employment anytime soon out of fear of leaving my daughter while COVID-19 was affecting everyone. Luckily, my partner is the head of the household and so there was no pressure for me to even get a job as our daughter was our main focus.
I started to lose myself into motherhood and anytime I would get family and friends to ask me about making cake I would immediately say YES. With COVID-19 affecting many businesses, I would get requests from neighbors, friends of friends, friends of family to make custom cakes and cookies for their celebrations. In the beginning I would get maybe one order a weekend or every other weekend, and then it later turned out to getting frequent orders on the weekend. I didn’t have a bussiness page at the time so many people would reach out to me personally on Facebook, Instagram or my personal number.
In October 2020 is when I decided to create Baking Your Day, and it started off slow with maybe 1 order a weekend again but over time now I have grown a clientele from all over DFW.
I have faced my fears of putting myself out there and have pop up events around the DFW area. The first pop up I had gave me so much confidence as I ended up selling out! This was definitely a milestone for me!
Now in 2023 I have been booked every weekend, and this went from a side hustle and keeping me sane from the challenges that I faced as a new mother and a stay at home mom, to a full time small bussiness. I am forever grateful for all my customers because I get to do what I love while being with my daughter. I am also happy that I get to keep this part of me alive because this is who I am, a cake and cookie artist.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
I think we can all agree that the best source for new clients for anyone is social media! Instagram has been a great source for new customers for Baking Your Day as I get direct messages on the daily. I created a website, www.bakingyourdaytx.com, which has helped me organize and grow my business. Through my website there is an order form that one can fill out that provides one with information about custom orders, which then gets sent directly to my email.
Overall Instagram has definitely helped my bussiness grow. I will admit that sometimes it is hard for me to keep with the new trends that are happening on the daily on social media. Reels are popular right now and when I make a reel with a trending song, I tend to get messages from new customers that ask about the services I offer. I have many people share my posts or stories and often get told that is how they found me.
