Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Marcus Gibson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Marcus, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been immersed in entertainment. Growing up, there was hardly silence in my house as my parents loved music and always found a reason to fill our world with it. My mother was a music teacher, so naturally my bothers and I dabbled in different instruments throughout our youth.
Unfortunately, there was not a single instrument that I connected with. It wasn’t until I was 13 that I discovered my creative gift, and that was drawing. This was where I found my skill and passion, and lost myself in the world of art.
Discovering my path into a career in the creative world really opened up for me around 16, when we were taking one of our trips to New York City to see a Broadway play.
As my father drove us into the city I saw a billboard with a sound console on it and found myself curious as to what all the knobs and faders did. That is when I decided one day I will be able to control everything on an audio console. This day came when I was 20 years old and enrolled in a music production program.
That one decision when I was 16 lead to a 20+ year career working with Universal, Blue Man Group, Disney, and edgefactory to partnering to form Hawkmoon.
Through this time I have been privileged to produce creative content for some of the biggest companies in the world. Not too shabby for a kid from Hempstead, NY.
Marcus, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Entertainment has always been a focal point of my life. From jamming out to classic soul at family dinners to spending my allowance on movie tickets, I have filled virtually every moment of my life with entertainment. It wasn’t until I discovered my skills in art that I went from being a spectator to a full participant in the entertainment industry.
Creating something wonderful from absolutely nothing is the true definition of art. For me it started with drawing which later led to music production. From here I crafted my technical skills that allowed me to bring any vision to life. Today, I produce ideas and concepts into creative entertainment.
My intuitive nature and ability to make anything work sets me apart from others. My mission is to create the moments that memories are made of.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is seeing an idea or concept take shape. There is something magical about taking a thought and making it real. Wether it is a drawing a picture, notes played on a guitar or a visual moment that was once in someone’s mind, the magic of creation is an amazing experience.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Life is not just black and white, for a creative mind lives in the many shades of grey. Structure and logic are just as important as freedom and flexibility. Some of the greatest things we have in life were created by accident. Allow yourself to make mistakes because you will learn something unexpected every time.
