We were lucky to catch up with Kayla Williams recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kayla, appreciate you joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Growing up as a dancer and performer, it was always stressed to be “stage ready.” Unfortunately, that brought about many underlying insecurities. Dealing with sensitive skin and eczema growing up left me feeling hopeless when it came to my skin. No matter how many products I tried over-the-counter, I was always left with experiencing side effects. I wanted to create Kay D. Essentials Organic Skincare to provide a safe way to treat the skin without the use of harsh chemicals. The K.D.E. brand is an all-natural, organic line that consists of skincare essentials for all skin types. It has been my greatest pleasure to hear all the success stories from my amazing customers. I believe that when you look good, you feel good. And when you feel good, you do good. So it’s become my personal mission to help as many people as possible to feel good from the inside out.
Kayla, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m an entrepreneur, content creator and dancer with a bachelor’s degree in Dance and Business. I have spent a great part of my life being on stages, which sparked a fire inside of me when it came to taking care of my skin. I launched Kay D. Essentials Organic Skincare in March of 2021 with exfoliating body scrubs, bar soaps and moisturizing body butters. However, it has evolved into a full body, facial, beard and yoni care line. K.D.E. began as solely an online business, but has been available at countless local vendor events as well as in a local mall during the 2022 holiday season. By using all-natural, organic ingredients, Kay D. Essentials provides a level of integrity in each product. I am most proud of knowing that each of my handmade skincare products are helping so many people of all ages, ethnicities, skin types and genders.
How’d you think through whether to sell directly on your own site or through a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc.
Kay D. Essentials Organic Skincare is available for purchase at www.kaydessentials.com. My website was created using Tailor Brands. I have had such a great experience with building my brand and one of the main compliments is due to the aesthetic of my website and consistency in my social media branding. I love that Tailor Brands was beginner friendly and affordable. Originally, I considered selling through Amazon and Etsy, however, I didn’t want to spread myself too thin on several platforms. So, I decided to stick with solely selling through www.kaydessentials.com.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Growing my clientele has been largely due to participating in regular vendor events. It gives me the opportunity to talk one-on-one with my customers, allow them to try some of the products, and to fully understand what their skincare needs and concerns are. In those moments I’m able to share my heart and passion for my business. I think that is helpful when it comes to growing my clientele and following on social media.
