We recently connected with Lori Garcia and have shared our conversation below.
Lori, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
When the pandemic hit in 2020, I was living in Orange County, California. During this year, our industry was completely shut down for 6 months because we were not considered an essential business. I had been working in Orange County for almost 20 years and had a full clientele that I cared for. In January of 2021, my husband had a job opportunity in Houston, Texas and we decided to take a huge leap of faith. I retired from the beauty industry and planned to stay at home and care for my family. After the first two months in our new city, I missed the career that I had loved and decided to reignite my passion for helping others feel beautiful. I found a new salon in the town that I moved to and took a risk of going back in to business without an established clientele. As an independent stylist, I am responsible for building my business and I was extremely fortunate to build a clientele within the first year of opening my chair to new clients. I am now working full time with a group of women that I dearly love and a gracious clientele that adds joy to my new life in Texas.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I got in to the beauty industry in 1997 after spending a couple of years in college. I was struggling to figure out an occupation that would not only help others, but something that could bring me joy. I started my career in Los Angeles, California and instantly knew that color was my passion. After a few years in LA as an apprentice, I moved to Orange County to build my career. I feel that coming from Los Angeles, I was able to bring my own unique style and techniques that helped me build my brand. I specialize in natural looking dimensional color that enhances your individual beauty. Because the integrity of the hair is my highest priority, I use Kevin Murphy color and products on my clients. Kevin Murphy is free from harsh chemicals that can be damaging to the hair and the environment. My desire is to help men and women feel confident in their appearance and to provide them with safe and sustainable products.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of mouth is the best form of advertisement around! Every client that sits in my chair is a unique opportunity to build trust for my brand and my reputation in the community. If a happy client tells someone about their positive experience, it creates trust before the new client ever sits in my chair.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Consistency! This includes the quality of my work, schedule availability, and maintaining gratitude for each and every individual that trusts me with their hair.
