We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brittany Nicholson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Brittany , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Learning photography has been one of the most fulfilling and challenging things I have ever done in my life. I started with a Nikon z50 that I found online, and started going around Nashville taking photos of buildings, pedestrians, landscapes etc. Once I realized that I needed to get more familiar and comfortable with my camera I signed up for a online course with the University of Michigan and got my certificate in photography. Starting those classes helped familiarize me with the functions of my camera. The next step was figuring out how to step out of the box and figure out my editing style, as well as facing a huge fear with social anxiety. It is a day by day process, but I am so glad that I made the jump in doing what I love.

Brittany , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Brittany, I am the owner of BrittMae Photography based out of Nashville, Tennessee. I specialize in live music and portrait photography. I started my business in late 2021, and started out by shooting local shows for free to get my portfolio established. Once I learned my craft, I applied to venues for house photography and was also accepted to a publication. I have been lucky enough to shoot for some of my favorite bands including Bring Me The Horizon, Knocked Loose, GWAR, Trivium, Silversun Pickups, and Whitechapel. Being able to shoot musicians in their happiest moments has been one the best experiences of my career. I enjoy shooting local Nashville bands, as well as providing band promotion photos. I have recently began offering modeling, cosplay, headshots, engagement, maternity, and other variety’s of photography as well. I feel that my judgement free attitude, as well as respect and patience really sets me apart from others. This opportunity has been a once in a lifetime chance, and I hope to be able to continue for many years as this transitions into a full time career.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social medias has been the main way I have been able to obtain clients, I try to post at least 3-4 times a week, at certain times a day, while also using popular hashtag to get a broader audience. Making sure to interact with others, tag them accordingly and be active on my facebook and Instagram has helped my gain the almost 1,500 wonderful followers I currently have! As far as advice for others, stay patient .. you will get there, I have my moments of feeling like I could be doing more, but just do what YOU can. It will be worth it in the end.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My main goal is to potentially make this into a full time career. Having a steady amount of clients each week to be able to work from home on my business is a huge goal to me. I would also really love to experience going on tour with a band as their personal photographer,
