We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Hannah Rotwein. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Hannah below.
Hannah, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I knew I wanted to study art in college, but I didn’t know what kind of career I’d pursue afterwards. I assumed it would be arts-adjacent, but it was while studying art as an undergraduate that I realized I wanted to be an artist. I also studied history and liberal arts in college, and I liked that art gave me the most tools to ask questions. As an artist, you can pursue a question with the tools that feel most relevant to that specific inquiry rather than being limited to the methods of only one discipline, as in history, anthropology, or biology.
Hannah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I make sculptures that expand beyond their physical borders by referencing domestic textiles, patterns, and textures. These references are more subtle than overt, more descriptive than prescriptive, and prompt expansive associations whereby a single grid of glue can simultaneously recall a checkerboard, quilt, or shower curtain. In nodding to the shared cultural aesthetic of home, the work feels relatable, resonant, and alive even though it is inanimate and abstracted.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the freedom inherent to the profession. If there is a topic or skill I want to learn, I need only my own permission to pursue it.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Residencies are a great resource, and they offer the time and space away from daily life that can be crucial for focusing on a project–especially if you work a non-art job or lack a studio. Res Artis is a great website for browsing residencies and finding ones that fit your needs.
