We recently connected with Jonté Johnson and have shared our conversation below.
Jonté, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
One day I’m at home relaxing and my phone rings, I didn’t answer because I thought it was a spam call. After the ringing stopped, I get a notification that I have a voice mail. I listen to the voice mail and it’s a manager of a company inquiring about the services my company offered. I was initially shocked because I had only been operating my business for a maybe a month or two at the time. That shocked feeling quickly turned to nervousness because now I must return the phone call and not mess up this first opportunity. I make the phone call, set up a meeting with the manager so I could get measurements so I could find the right vending machine for this business. Once I got the measurements, I got in contact with a vending machine warehouse and found the right machine. Two weeks later the machine was delivered, and I made my first dollar.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Jonté Johnson originally from Reidsville NC, but currently reside in Greensboro NC. I got into to the vending business because I wanted a challenge something different. I currently work as a mail carrier for USPS and felt like I needed to push myself outside of work. So, one day I’m scrolling on Facebook, and I see a picture of the top businesses to start with low start-up cost. For some reason vending machines stuck out to me. So, I begin doing some research, bought a course on the vending machine business and next thing I know I had a business started. My business solves problems for working people at companies that may not get a lunch break, have time to go out for lunch, or just want a quick snack. I feel like this business cares about the client it’s not just about making money we really want to make sure people are satisfied. I think I’m most proud of the fact we’re not the biggest of companies yet but we’re hanging around and getting phone calls for potential business.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Funding came from the money I’ve had saved up. Instead of just spending it on just anything, I took a chance and started a business.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I would say the Bible, my favorite verse is 2 Timothy 1:7 which is “For the spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self discipline”. Whenever getting ready for a meeting with a potential client, I get nervous but that verse helps me understand that I have what it takes to get that client. Whenever business is not going like I want it to that verse helps know that I’m equipped to last.
