We recently connected with Jamila Martin and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jamila, thanks for joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I came up with the idea of owning an online boutique, specializing in plus size womenswear, because of the limited amount of boutiques that cater to the genre. I, myself, am a plus size woman of color. Going to the regular department stores, sometimes would be a hit and miss for trendy clothing. So I figured, hey, if you have a thing for fashion and love to shop; why don’t I get into selling clothing and accessories. I’m a huge fashion guru, so I thought, Jamila, why don’t you get into the fashion/clothing industry, some sort of way. While having an online boutique, I sometimes set up at local pop up shops and other events. The most exciting thing, or more so part, of starting my boutique; was the shopping experience! Mostly, going out to the different vendors and picking out clothing, was the most exciting part for me.
Jamila, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My online boutique is named, Curvae Namaste. Although, I own a boutique, my background is totally different. My educational background is within Public Administration and Pre-Law. I’m currently a Child Welfare Case Manager. I’m basically a problem solver for youths, who are a ward of the state.
My brand is catered to the plus size community! Helping one to embrace in their curves, collectively and stylish! No matter your size, you can still be trending!
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
My best source of obtaining new clients, has been by attending local events. Passing out business cards and letting them know, that you can do custom orders and ship to whatever part of the country or the world, will definitely help you to obtain and gain loyal clientele. Also, providing that one on one experience, for your clients; whether it may be a FaceTime call or zoom call so they may view the items, will also help you to retain new and a loyal clientele.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
I keep in touch with my clients by sending out newsletters and personalized text messages of new arrivals. I also foster brand loyalty by providing personalized services to clients. My customers are not just customers, they’re clients!
