We recently connected with Mya Alysia and have shared our conversation below.
Mya , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Being a Media Host/Media Personality and creating my own brand was always in the cards!
Thanks to my mom and her always trying to figure out any and every way to see to it that I am on the path that really makes me happy, we came up with the idea to create my own lane.
Instead of pouring my ideas into a company built from someone’s dreams and aspirations, my mother encouraged me to work on my dreams and career goals to create and build my own brand/platform.
She encouraged me to look at all of the responsibilities that I would be tasked with doing at a company and put that hard work into myself, and that was the start to something great, with the creation of, Mya Alysia Podcast on Apple Podcast and Youtube, and a year later me having my own radio show “The Mya Alysia Radio Show” via WDRB MEDIA every Thursday at 9 AM EST.
Stepping out and letting things align as I go really was some crazy, scary faith, but all of that got me to where I am today and where I will be in the future.
Investing, believing, and pouring into yourself can be confusing and scary but without taking that leap I would have never seen the numerous opportunities that have presented themselves to me, nor, accomplished my wins so fast.
Yes, I still get deterred and scared to put myself out there, but I think success really is obtained based on if you quit or keep pushing for what you want!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hello Canvas Rebel Readers!
I am Mya Alysia, the creator and host of The Mya Alysia Podcast on Apple Podcasts and YouTube, and Radio Personality on The Mya Alysia Radio Show streaming on WDRBmedia, airing every Thursday at 9 AM EST, tap in on Apple Music or the Tunein Radio App where I play the hottest R&B and Hip-Hop music, interview and spotlight your faves, the hottest up and coming talent in the industry, spotlighting and bringing exposure to their endeavors, ventures, music drops, products, and so much more, no topic is off limits.
I am a graduate of THEE Illustrious North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University (NC A&T), the #1 HBCU.
Where I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism and Mass Communication with a concentration in Multimedia Journalism, graduating with the Highest GPA in my major concentration, Multimedia Journalism, and graduating in the top 10 percent for my major, my educational background guided me on my career path, and I must say my degree is A Degree Well Worth it!
My journey as a Multimedia Journalist, Media Personality, On-Air Radio Personality, and/or Media Host, started when I was young, my interest for the media and entertainment industry started as a small person growing up watching 106 & Park with hosts, Terrence J and Rocsi Diaz, listening to Ryan Cameron & Elle Duncan, and Frank Ski & Wanda on The People’s Station V-103, Atlanta’s hottest radio station, as well as many other media personalities.
In fifth grade, I had an opportunity to tap into my aspirations to do what my favorite media personalities were doing by auditioning for the Morning Announcer, BOOM, I got the position, LOL, and from there, my excitement for media progressed to middle school where I did the morning announcements as well.
As a people person, a talker, and a natural-born personable girl, everyone could see the media industry was definitely my calling, funny thing is, I was a great debater too, so part of me wanted to pursue a career in law as an attorney, so my mom forced me to attend law school camp at UGA, University of Georgia, LOL, shoutout to my mommy, because that showed me that was NOT FOR ME! It was so muchhh work, call me lazy but definitely not my ministry (LOL), after attending the law camp, it became clear to me, Journalism and Mass Communication was the career goal for me,
Throughout my collegiate career, I was granted so many amazing opportunities. I was an on-air personality for my school’s radio station WNAA 90.1 THE VOICE, interned at 102 JAMZ, ABC Action News, FOX News, and was a cohort in the HBCU IN LA program.
Covid forced me to be a creative and start my own podcast, I’m not limited to being a host on my podcast, or an on-air radio personality, I also enjoy being a Media Host at events, it brings me so much joy to speak, celebrate others, and share informational stories with the masses!
The journey is just beginning and I’m so excited for what is in store and to come for me!
STAY TUNED!
How did you build your audience on social media?
When it comes to building your audience and presence on social media, BE YOURSELF!
I can’t stress that enough, oftentimes people are trying to keep up with trends, people, and things that they’ve seen do numbers or blow up overnight and that will get you nowhere fast.
We are living in a digital age where trends are so common, so now everyone thinks that is the key to going viral and having a big social media presence. Granted, that may work, but copying others is so unoriginal and not authentic. Why be like someone else when it’s only one you? Tap into what makes you special, happy, and perfect that!
Your audience will find you.
Forget about what people will think or who will like it, trust me it’s something for everyone. I started tapping into my craft and what makes me special, I’ve grown my followers, and went viral within months just by being myself and doing what I want.
It was scary putting myself out there, but it was well worth it and received very well from others! Its crazy we are the only ones that are so worried about others and whole time everyone is here for it!
If I never started my podcast, and posting up my interviews, I would still be where I was before I started. Nowhere.
Honestly, just do you!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A big lesson I learned is nothing happens overnight!
I’m a person that wants fast results, and when I don’t see that happening it deters me and makes me feel like I’m behind.
Instead of basking in all the wins that have occurred for me, I’m searching for the next win and I want to see it happen fast. I had to learn my desired wins are possible and will happen, however, I must put the work in for those wins, and have patience.
For example, Beyonce didn’t just become Beyonce overnight she put in years on top of years of work, and she was in a time where it was even harder because there was no social media.
I think realizing I’m so young, and in my prime is helping me understand to continue to put in the work and I’ll continue to reach heights that I never knew was possible like I’ve been doing!
Also, stop comparing yourself to others, we don’t know what they’ve went through to get to where they are and their blessings is just that theirs.
That won’t take away from what is in store for you either, and it is so much room for everyone to win in their own time!
