Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to King Ken. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
King Ken, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
If I could go back in time I probably would’ve started pursuing music earlier in life but I didn’t and you know what? That’s ok! It just means it wasn’t really my time. I started writing music and poetry in middle school but I kind of just kept it under lock and key because I would second guess myself. If my older self could tell my younger self something it would be; ”if they don’t pay your bills their opinion is irrelevant”.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
A little about myself…. I go by King Ken. I’m a music artist/writer. I was born and raised in New York, I defiantly
believe NY molded me into the person I am today mentally and musically…after all NY is the birth place of Hip-Hop.
As I just mentioned to you earlier I started writing music and poetry at a young age but I never pursued it.
I like to think of music as therapy, if I’m angry I’m writing an aggressive song, if I’m happy I’m writing a conscious song, and if I’m feeling flirtatious you’re getting an early Lil Kim type song. Lol.
What sets me apart from the rest…easy… I don’t follow trends and I stay true to myself. I also hate the thought of being boxed in so I never want to keep sounding the same on a song that’s like equivalent to wearing the same underwear over and over again….like no. Lol.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I built my audience off just living freely. I dress how I want, I say and joke around how I want, and my audience appreciates that. I get so many DMs from my supporters like “I wish I had your confidence” My advice is walk with your head up and stay true to yourself because at the end of the day people switch up very quickly…one day they like you and the next day they don’t so who cares what they think.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
What’s most rewarding to me is being able to freely express myself however I want. I don’t feel owned and I enjoy it. If there is ever a point in life where it becomes unenjoyable I don’t want it.
