We were lucky to catch up with Dr. Crystal-Ann England recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dr. Crystal-Ann , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
In August of 2021, my employer placed me in a position where I had to make a very difficult decision. The offices were re-opening, and my boss wanted me back physically in the building, but I wasn’t ready to leave my children. The job was great, the benefits, and the pay were great but all of that weren’t enough to compel me to leave my kids. Though I was working a 9-5 my entire career up to that point, I always knew that I wanted my own practice. This was my moment. The Universe was conspiring for me again, and I knew within my soul that I had to trust it. It would be dishonest of me to say that I wasn’t terrified. I mean, leaving a secure job to start a new business with 2 kids at home is not a decision to be taken lightly. But I did it! I fired my boss and started my private practice.
I had never run a business before, but I trusted myself. I trusted my partner who stood with me, and I trusted the Universe. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. However, the transition was not easy. I had no clients, and I had no office space. Fortunately, since remote services were the norm at the time, I was able to start seeing clients from the comfort of my “home office”. In no time at all, I had a full schedule of clients. I was living and breathing my dream of helping women, from all walks of life, to find themselves, discover their passions, and heal their bodies, souls, hearts & minds.
It is often said, “do what you love, and you will never work a day in your life.” Well, that day, in 2021, when I made the decision to quit my, comfortable, job was the day I stopped working. My practice is truly an extension of myself. Yes, some days are more exhausting than others, but the reward is immeasurable. I get to see my clients transition from darkness to light. I get to inspire, and, quite frankly, be inspired.
Today, I run a hugely successful practice. It was, certainly, my greatest risk, and it has been one of my greatest rewards. I am humbled, grateful, and so very privileged.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Luna Sky Wellness & Consulting provides intimate therapeutic, wellness, and coaching services to women of the diaspora and beyond. Being a first-generation woman from the Caribbean, I understand the challenges that comes with trying to assimilate to American culture all while holding true to your cultural identity. One such challenge that many first-gens experience is the feeling of not truly belonging or identifying with one culture or the other. My goal with these clients is to facilitate the fusion of these cultural differences as they move towards finding their own unique path.
What makes my practice unique is that I utilize traditional and non-traditional techniques with my clients such as Walk & Talk Therapy, Guided Meditations, Visualizations, Journaling, and Family of Origin Work. Furthermore, in my experience, there is a common language thread that runs between all first-generation Americans whether you are of Hispanic, Caribbean, African, or European descent, and I am fluent in this language. Lastly, I want readers to know that Luna Sky Wellness & Consulting is a place where client can feel safe, heard, seen, and validated.
Any advice for managing a team?
The greatest advice I have for anyone managing a team and maintaining high morale would be:
Get to know your team members. Take time to not only identify areas each member can grow in but also keep an inventory of their strengths. True leaders are able to harness, encourage and highlight the strengths of each member on their team.
A strong leader understands that respect is earned when your team perceives you as not only competent but also fair, reliable, and consistent.
Being proactive in your approach is key.
When mistakes happen own them and find solutions for the future.
Recognize when your team is struggling and understand the importance of being in tune.
Be humble enough to be teachable.
Transparency is worth more than gold.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
If I could go back I would have chosen this profession every time. Being a therapist is not a job for me, I am so blessed that I truly feel that the work I do is another expression of who I am as a person.
