Awesome, my name is Dr. Jameelah Wilkerson as known as Just Jay. Im from Indiana and I started doing business when I was 18 years old. I got into the publishing industry when I was 22 years old and started The Hype Magazine. The Hype (How You Perceive Everything) was originally built out to be a literary publication, but the day before our print debut I decided to add more music and entertainment stories in the magazine. Our tag Line is Hip Hop To Hollywood, so the focus was covering all genres and including topics in the magazine that was not music related. When I first presented this idea people said it would never work because we needed to cater to a niche, but I decided to be a trend setter and do it my way.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?

I had to really unlearn the hustle mentality. I was rushing the process and not really doing my due diligence on building out the business side of things. If I could go back I would really draft out a business plan and a financial plan and follow those steps in order.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?

I honestly worked my way through everything, When I needed capital for something I just got hired on for a few projects and made it happen. Everything was day to day and project to project, until I learned the financial side of the business.
