A dad can’t find a bakery to make a birthday cake that can accommodate his daughter’s allergy-related needs. Two freelancers realize they need a way to organize all of their client contracts and can’t find software that adequately handles their use case. Necessity is often hailed as the mother of innovation – but not all ideas come from necessity. Unfortunately, in our experience, often media coverage of the ideas that powered amazing businesses and projects often stops at a very superficial level. The founders noticed a need and boom – idea. Often the ideation process has a much longer, more complex story and so we’ve asked some entrepreneurs and creatives we admire to go into detail about their ideation stories.

I am a third generation florist. My mother ran a direct to consumer flower business out of our childhood home. From working with her I learned a lot about entrepreneurship and floristry. It wasn’t until I moved to Minneapolis however that I started thinking about Sip ‘N Bloom. In 2019 there was big demand for DIY workshops like Painting with a Twist, Suc It Up Buttercup etc. No one was doing flowers in that format, and I saw an opportunity to use my existing skillset to fill the void. Meg Hafdahl and I met 23 years ago because of an X-Files t-shirt! We both shared a mutual love of the show and soon discovered we both loved the horror genre as well. We started a podcast called Horror Rewind and realized every week we were naturally gravitating towards talking about the science, history, and lore behind our favorite horror movies. This led us to write our first book, The Science of Monsters (2019) and we’ve recently completed the sixth book in the series coming out later this year! Read more>>
