We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Rob Newmans. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Rob below.
Rob, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
That’s easy, SUPPORT! My parents have always been supportive, no matter what I was getting into. I think I was fairly a good kid which had made it easier for them to do so. They obviously provided me with as much love as I could absorb while still laying down the law when it was needed. But what I think I appreciated the most was them letting me go out into the world and be myself. Even when it was something they may have been nervous or scared to watch. They realized early that their personal beliefs on life or things to do where not or at least didn’t have to be the same for me. Growing up I was a daredevil and into some pretty extreme activities. Then has I got older, I wanted to start traveling the world, even by myself. No matter how crazy it made them or how nervous it made them, they took a step back and let me go experiment and explore. Even to this day I’m fairly sure there are things I do or places I go that they are thinking “this kid is crazy” but they support me anyway.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
This is a tough one because I am so many things. And it’s shifted over the years. So first off, I’m a problem solver! My schooling and work background was all Architecture, Engineering, construction managment and fire prevention. All of which basically come with a set of problems for each project you come across and they need a solution. I guess I have a detail oriented mind and I’m the type to break things down and start with everything in its simplest forms. And this is how I attack everything in my life. But I’ve always worked to live, rather than lived to work. So I’ve always kept a strong presence of play in my life, And I am a jack of all trades when it comes to play. Now that I’ve been so blessed to retire from the 9-5 grind, thanks to my lovely wife and her entrepreneur drive, which I for sure do not have. Haha I’ve been able to spend more time doing the things I love and enjoy. I’ve discovered that I really enjoy teaching a lot of the things I enjoy as well. This goes back to that problem solvers mind, here I get to help other solve the problems they are having. I’ve been teaching Acroyoga, slackline, flow arts and fire dancing over the past decade. My attention to details really come in handy here allowing me to guide others along paths that they may not have previously seen or been aware of. All of these movement modalities I love because I feel movement is the fountain of youth and I plan to keep on playing for as long as I can. Another passion of mine is sound healing or meditations. I really have zero musical knowledge as far as reading and writing music. However sound healing to me is more about the vibrations rather than the musical notes. Vibrations are felt and because of this I find sound healing to be quite intuitive. The energy and vibe you feel from someone else are also very intuitive. And there is just something so magical about feeling anothers energy and through sound and vibration being about to take that energy and shift it, almost instantly. And these are all the things that keep me happy these days teaching these movement arts and sending vibrational healing out into the world. Rather I’m doing events, festivals or private sessions, I love sharing the things that bring me joy with others in order to help them find joy and put smiles on the faces of the world. Smiles are my favorite.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
So I took a class in community college that I feel I owe a lot of my frame of mind in life. The class was called “pre-social adjustment.” Some of the concept from this class were not to worry so much, 90% of those things are out of your control. We did exercises and made up stories about people based on how they looked, to then find out how far off those stories were. Basically a lot of social dynamics and how to navigate them from a place of your own self control. Fast forward I’ve now started listening to audio books and find that the self-help books are my favorite. Any discussions on how to become more self aware really interest me. The humans brain is a wild and amazing thing that subconsciously controls our everyday life. And by learning to be aware of and learn to take control of our thoughts in the moment we can gain an unbelievable amount of control over our lives.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I think maybe the best way is for society to support itself. Most artist and creatives do what they do in order to help others in one way or another. At least for me I teach to bring joy to others. My sound healing session are in order to help others with anxiety, stress or to find a deeper state of relaxation. Most people aren’t willing to invest in themselves, invest in self-love, invest in happiness, invest in health. Yet I feel these are the most important investments in life. So if we can all just realize that by supporting others we are in turn supporting ourselves. I have a little thing I like to do with large groups. I put everyone into a circle, a tight circle to where everyone is standing front to back, front to back. Then all at the same time I have them slowly sit down into the lap of the person behind them. The circle self supports itself. You are effectively supporting only the person in front of you. But because of this they can support the person in front of them and so on. All the way around the circle of any number of people. And in the end you are supported by the person behind you. So by you supporting one person you have helped to support many people as well as support yourself.
