Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brittany Williams. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Brittany thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I took the saying “when you look good, you feel good” to heart at a very young age. I believe a woman performs her best when she feels her best and feeling her best starts with looking her best. That said, my mission is not only to provide high quality, fashionable, and functional apparel to working women in order to ease the transition from a work day to a night out; but it’s also to uplift less fortunate women who may be in a season of transition in their lives. It may be escaping an unhealthy relationship, moving out on her own for the first time, or finally landing that corporate job she’s been wanting for so long. Whatever the case may be, my mission is to make sure women who may not have the resources to look their best are not deprived of the opportunity to look and feel good as they embark on a new journey in life.
Brittany, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve had a passion for all things fashion-related my entire life. As a young college student, I worked in retail for several well-known companies from small specialty boutiques to large department stores and even a popular luxury brand all while pursuing a career in modeling; but I’ve always dreamed of owning my own women’s apparel store. As times, technology, and the economy changed, an online boutique became the obvious next step in my entrepreneurial journey. After moving to Atlanta in 2016 and working in the heart of the city, I began to notice a common theme among working women who were striving to keep up with their active social lives: if the after-work activity meant having to go home to change first, consider the activity cancelled. I realized there wasn’t a market specifically for business casual apparel that transitioned from day to night seamlessly. Thus Boss Beauty Wardrobe was born.
How’d you think through whether to sell directly on your own site or through a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc.
I sell on my website, customers can also purchase directly via social media, I attend events that allow me to come face-to-face with potential new clients, and I’m actually building my Amazon store currently. With so many ways to get your products into the hands of consumers, I think it’s wise to take advantage as many of the options as possible.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I first began selling online, I used the dropshipping method in an attempt to keep costs low. Customers would place their orders with me and I would contact the manufacturer who would process and ship it directly to the customer. I never got to see the product/packaging before it went to the customer, I had no involvement with the shipping, etc. This process sent my anxiety into overdrive! As someone with an extensive background not just in customer service, but good customer service, it was more important to me that the customer had an unforgettable shopping experience from the moment she access my website to the moment she unfolds her merchandise. In order to accomplish this, I had to pivot to keeping inventory on had and taking complete control of the fulfillment process. Now when a customer receives an order, there’s branded packaging and tags, thank you cards and paper confetti, I steam it myself and photos are taken, it’s shipped in a timely fashion, and I follow the tracking until the order is successfully delivered. If there’s an issue with delivery, I personally contact the customer and the parcel company to get the issue resolved as quickly as possible. It’s imperative that all of these steps are taken because I want the client to be able to feel how important their business is to me.
