We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Laura Teichroeb. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Laura below.
Laura, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I’ve taken giant leaps into the unknown many times in my life. Free-falling, with nothing but determination and sheer strength of will to catch me. Starting my own business was no different. I was on disability because I couldn’t work. Constantly stressed because the disability payments didn’t cover the bills. Mentally struggling to recover from childhood trauma and abuse. I had nowhere to turn and nothing to fall back on, except myself. Believing in myself turned into long days filled with constant learning. Cramming new information in my head at every turn, scrambling to learn everything I needed to know for a successful business. Sheer panic in the many moments of not knowing how the future would unfold. Would I fall on my face? Would I rise like the phoenix from the ashes? Would I lose everything, and fail myself, fail my babies? Questions that would wake me in the dead of night, soaked in a cold panic sweat.
Funny thing about life, is that I still have days like these. Even though I have been successfully growing this business, I still have days I panic. What if it fails? What if I lose it all? I don’t know if that feeling ever goes away, but I do know that each time I choose to believe in myself, each time I level up and step up, my faith in myself grows stronger. And with faith like that, who knows what I can do!!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am very proud of my NASM CPT certification. It is considered one of the best in the industry. The exam is intimidating with one out three people failing their exam attempt. I’m very proud of the knowledge and expertise I gained through completing the NASM course.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Understanding successful behaviour change!! If I’m an expert in the science of health and fitness, but I don’t know how to adapt that knowledge into the steps needed for successful behaviour change, that knowledge will be wasted because no change will occur in the client.
The science of health and fitness for the generally healthy population is quite simple. By keeping it simple, breaking it down into small, actionable steps, goals can easily be achieved and change occurs.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I was raised in a strict religious cult. I went to a small private school that finished at grade 10. I had very little exposure to “the outside world”. I was a girl, so I was taught how to keep house and have children. My family home was also extremely abusive. To this day, I have moments I become acutely aware of my environment, and there’s an internal surprise that I’m here, because I never thought I’d live this long.
As a teenager I began fighting back, and by 19 I left my home, the cult, everything I knew, to forge my own path. Life was so different outside the cult, it was like trying to survive on another planet. I like to say, imagine you landed on the set of Star Wars. You are flying through space at mock gajillion speed, you’re in an airship and you have to figure out how to fly it. Meanwhile you have laser beams shooting at you, so you have to defend yourself, and figure out how to shoot back. That was adjusting to life outside the cult.
I spent a few years desperately scrambling to get my life together. Things came together in a way after awhile, but then fell apart again when I broke up with my first serious relationship, and had to move back in with my parents. That was when I first stepped foot in a gym. I decided to take my life back into my own hands. I decided I was not going to end up like my parents, old and grey long before their time. My physical fitness journey gave me the strength to address my mental health, and I began to heal right in front of the people who hurt me. And now I support people in their physical fitness journeys, which strengthens and improves their mental health as well!
