We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Akilyah Carpenter a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Akilyah thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
My business name is Asha’s Ascending Acts of Service LLC. My business name was created because my name is Akilyah Asha Adisa Carpenter which roughly translates to “intelligent one who reasons with life” and Asha translates to life in Arabic. My love language is acts of service and my goal has always been to help people elevate or “ascend” to their highest self in their direct reality when it comes to their work and home life.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Of course! My name is Akilyah Carpenter and I am the proud business owner of Asha’s Ascending Acts of Service LLC. which was officially established in 2022. I was born in Atlanta GA but raised in Indianapolis IN and can genuinely say both environments have molded me and my goals to aim for the stars. My business originally started back in 2017 when my friends and I were looking for jobs that could grow into a career or at least give as more perspectives on our options. I realized that our resumes were in the way of amazing opportunities so I spent months learning about how to construct amazing resumes to match our skills. My best friend and other loved ones allowed me to practice my resume tactics with theirs and we all started getting great jobs with little to no work experience, just full transparency and a good resume. Somehow the word began to spread that I was able to help others get into the jobs they wanted Vs the work they needed to do and business conceived and nurtured itself over the years. The services I currently offer as of 01/01/2023 with more services pending are:
– Resume and cover letter writing services
– 1 on 1 job interview prep and job search assistance
– Business start up assistance: assistance with filing LLC and required paperwork for approval with the state, EIN and DUNS filing
– Business start up bundle: Business card, business flyer and assistance with setting up business related social media
– Personal assistant services
– Notary Services: limited to the state of Indiana until further notice
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I believe that I’ve always been a resilient being in this world. From being a child of an addict, to being a foster kid most of my life, entering my 20s homeless and confused, to starting my business not even 60 days after losing my home in ATL, my car, and all of my belongings after being in a traumatic car crash that resulted in a minor brain injury, a minor spine injury, and nerve damage, and the list can go on. I’ve always views instances like that as tests of morals and character developers. But my REAL resilience showed its peak on 11/19/2022, the weekend before Thanksgiving, when I got the phone call that my mother and step father had died. Despite being in utter shock and immense emotional pain, I was able to plan and pay for my mothers funeral and expenses within 1 week (thanks to friends and family), attend my step fathers service a week after my brothers, and I was able to keep my business operating so my clients wouldn’t be left behind. My strength is not quitting on my hardest days and pushing for my dream despite the fact that I did all of this for my mother from the beginning.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe that my transparency genuinely built my reputation within the market, as well as clients end results after receiving one of my services.‘ I’m very vocal on social media and behind the scenes and will admit if I’m new to a concept, if I don’t know how to do what’s being requested but tell the client I can always learn and try, and I’ve never let the client end their experience merely content. I’ve reached out to clients after reviewing a final product and saying “Hey! I know you wouldn’t know the difference but I made a format mistake and I would love to fix it”. I accept constructive criticism from my clients and provide a safe space for those who feel embarrassed for not knowing how to do the craft they’re paying for: I understand that I’m not perfect but I do feel as if I’m the best at what I do because I’ve created my own lane and this confidence came from my loyal and my inquiring clients! My clients are my brand!
