We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Rana Sewsarran. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Rana below.
Rana, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I have a strong passion for food and having family and friends over on the weekends for dinner and special occasions. I enjoy trying new foods and different recipes which I create with my own personal touch. For me, the fun was in imagining what I wanted to create, and executing it for others, rather than having it for myself. I began doing meal prep for a very close friend of mine as a hobby. As a personal trainer, he referred me to a few of his clients for meal prep to help with their fitness journeys giving each client a unique experience tailored to their liking. It is most refreshing when you can change the way people look at food especially in an industry where nutrition and weight goals are a challenge. I never thought I would have shifted from the medical field to the hospitality industry, it was a scary but exciting transition. To solidify this niche market, I got my certification as a Sports Nutritionist to understand how to create delicious, innovative, healthy, and unique meals while understanding the importance of the macro nutrient needs for each individual that I was now preparing meals for. Gaining more popularity, the best way possible; “word of mouth” for the unique meal prep options I created I made the leap starting Mad Mushroom Meals. The excitement of hearing all the positive feedback was almost overwhelming but I wanted to do more and I wanted to be different and offer an experience to my clients through food. The requests for corporate and social event catering came pouring in and through experiences at these jobs I decided to offer specially curated pop-up events for clients. Mad Mushroom Meals is continuing to evolve and provide the highest quality of food and unique experiences for our clients.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Rana Sewsarran and I am the Chef and owner of Mad Mushroom Meals. My story began while I was studying in university pursuing a career in the medical field. I developed a love for cooking because of my nostalgia for food that I was accustomed to in my home country of Trinidad and Tobago and the types of elevated and creative meals my Mom frequently prepared. In addition, as I was working long shifts in the Emergency Room, I saw a need for prepared meals. Between my meal prep clients and what I was experiencing in the emergency room at work I knew I was on to something as It was all happening so fast. I made the choice and Mad Mushroom Meals was born in 2016 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida! In just a short period of time preparing a few meals daily, I began preparing over 300 customized and nutritionally tailored meals weekly.
As the business grew, our services grew along with it. Expanding into family, corporate, and social event catering including weekly pop-ups for take-out and specially curated food experiences. After five successful years in Ft. Lauderdale, I decided to relocate to Central Florida, brining my love and passion for food to Orlando, a place that I have always dreamed of residing, with plans of Brick and Mortar. The Company’s goal is to elevate customer service, food quality and presentation bringing a new approach to the food industry. As new beginnings are on the fore front, I am excited for the future of Mad Mushroom and its new home.
