We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ghost Town. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ghost below.
Alright, Ghost thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
How I started in mural work, and just freelance work in general, was kind of an accident. It started with a few friends/local business owners that liked my art that I was doing in my free time. Once I was able to get a few projects up on a wall, I was hooked.
The behind the scenes parts of running a business is a process that will likely never end. I’m far from knowing everything that I need to know, but the journey of the last handful of years has been very humbling. I’m excited for the years to come to see what else I will learn and how I can grow from that.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I work as a muralist mainly, but also do lots of one off digital illustration commissions. Logos, to branding, to merch, to just about anything that you could fit a cartoon into.
Every new project I complete adds another layer to my overall experience. I use elements from past projects to create inspiration for new works or to find ways to improve in my current styles.
The creative community is such an awesome group to be able to be a part of. Everyone just wants to lift each other up and find ways for us all to find success, in whatever ways that may look like.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
As a coffee trainer back in the day, I used drawing as a way to decompress before/after shifts. Being able to just hang out in cafes and feel that energy and use that as an influence for my drawings was always awesome.
I had friends/regulars see my work and start asking about small one-off designs. That’s kind of where it all started.
Once COVID started, I was laid off from my job in coffee. Because of that I had to sort something out. Between my own drawing at home to pass the time, and the eventual working together with local businesses, the pieces kind of just fell into place. Now here we are three years going and still staying at it. And I don’t see myself stopping any time soon.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
My friends and my supporters really keep me going and have helped me continue to grow. The influence of social media really is wild how much that can shape and change someone’s life.
I really don’t know if I’d be where I’m at today if it wasn’t for social media allowing for added reach to folks I’d never interact with in person.
