We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Goodness Ihekweme. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Goodness below.
Goodness, appreciate you joining us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
Yes, I wished I could’ve started my creative journey a lot sooner. I started my creative journey when I was In college. I honestly just wanted to test how creative I could be. When I was in college I always found myself more interested in Fashion. Fashion was a passion that I wanted to explore for me. Well, it all started after High-school when I realized I wanted to get into Fashion school In New York but it was too expensive. I decided to go to Prince George’s Community College for two years before I transferred to Univeristy Of Maryland College Park. When I started taking my passion serious I was young and scared. I wasn’t surrounded by people who shared the same interests. I felt like an outcast for so long because everyone around me wanted to become a Doctor, Lawyer &, etc. That was none of my interest at all. I started going after what I truly wanted while balancing school work. Every day I studied the game and experimented. I started making clothes for myself for fun and recorded the process. I usually keep them for myself but this time I wanted the world to see what I’m made of. Once I started showing more of my process and my ups and down, people started to become inspired. That’s when it all happened to me. That’s when I realized I could do this. I sometimes wondered what it would look like if I just started my journey in High-school. I felt like I would have the whole of my High-School career to make as many mistakes as I can in the game so that by the time I’m done college I can make it full-time. That was what I thought would be better but I was wrong, God had a better plan. I started to realize that everything happens for a reason and I am exactly where I need to be. I’ve learned so much from my experiences and people. I don’t regret anything in my past and I wouldn’t change one thing.

Goodness, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi , my name is Goodness Ihekweme and I am the CEO of Onye VÈ. Onye Vè stands for “Imperfection is perfection.” We specialize in Women and Men clothing. We make my customers feel beautiful and confident in their own body while standing out and being unique. I am most proud of how far I came, from my first designs till now. I have grown so much as a designer and every time my designs keep getting better and better. I get inspired daily and it reflects in my designs. What sets me apart from others is my creative eye, I just know what would look good together. What also sets me apart is my creative direction on how I want my vision to come to life and I mean all the way down to the location, models, photographer, colors and etc. I got into the business by simply just being me and trusting in God every step of the way. I had to be a student in the game and learn, practice and discipline myself.

How did you build your audience on social media?
Honestly, God did it. When I stopped caring about what people had to say or what society wanted me to do to grow my page… I instantly grew. I was just being myself and doing what I truly love to do and thats just to create. The best advice I can give anyone trying to grow their social media presence is to be unapologetically you. Any thoughts that’s holding you back mentally , let it go. I repeat, Let it go. Be you and stay consistent. You got this!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is to see other people in my brand. It’s so humbling and I honestly love everything about it. Also, bringing a new idea to life is the most rewarding aspect of my work. During the creative process, I feel most inspired when I have a new idea and the vision to create it. By working through this process, I design and experiment to refine a particular technique.
