We recently connected with Angela Perry and have shared our conversation below.
Angela, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
One of the most meaningful projects I have worked on is working with the elderly community in the area of music. I decided to bring music to the elderly community in specific assisted living facilities because there is a need to bring joy and laughter. Music is one avenue that can provide this. Many musicians forget marginalized populations and concentrate solely on gaining popularity or making money and they forget to give back to the community. When I perform at a venue (bar, stage, etc) , I also contact assisted living facilities in the area and perform for them. I may be performing for them but I can truly say that the experience is fantastic and it is really I that benefits from this.

Angela, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been involved in music most of my life and I consider it to be my passion and a huge part of my life. The music business is not an easy one. Creating music is hard enough but music is also a business that has so many facets to it. I love to write music and perform it but I also have embraced the business side of music. Only by embracing all aspects of the music business can an individual be successful.
One of the main problems I had to solve in order to be able to do this business at all, one has to be extremely organized and understand the concept of time management. I also realized that I needed to “farm out” services that took a vast amount of time.
I am most proud of some of the projects I am involved in regard to music. These projects include working with marginalized populations using music as a tool to bring joy, laughter, and smiles. Sometimes all of us take things for granted and music is no exception.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I think one of the most misunderstood concepts that non-creatives struggle with is the concept that musicians are just doing “it” as a hobby or as just something extra to add to their “normal” career. The problem with this is that many fail to see that being a musician is a career, and should be treated as such. Where musicians see this is in the lack of payment for their services in performing, the lack of being taken seriously in their craft, and the critical judgment placed on musicians for what they do and do not do in the field of work. Many seem to think that being a musician is not hard work and this leads to the lack of being taken seriously.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is watching people enjoy the music I produce or perform. It creates a beautiful energy that is positive and in this world of so many negative things, positivity is sought out by all.
