We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mindy Davey. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mindy below.
Mindy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I’ve had a lot of meaningful projects I’ve worked on. Every song I write has a deep meaning but one song in particular “Morgan’s Song” has hands down been the most meaningful. I wrote the song about a girl named Morgan from Albany NY who was bullied to the point of wanting to end her life. I came across her story on a Facebook page called “Hope Rises”. They were asking for people to send Morgan cards to show her she is loved. So I wrote her this song, collected cards from my own fans and drove out to Albany NY to meet Morgan in person. I found out it was her birthday so we surprised her with a cake, cards, a guitar and I sang her “Morgans Song”. I even taught her how to play “Morgan’s Song”. The song not only meant a lot to Morgan but so many others who were bullied related to it as well. So we released the song and made an anti-bullying music video to raise awareness on the effects bullying has on a person. This entire experience and project was beyond special and meaningful. Helping others is what I stand for. So when someone comes up to me or tells me on social media my song has helped them in so many ways that means the world to me. That’s why I do what I do!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My names Mindy Davey. I’m a singer-songwriter and public speaker from Buffalo NY. I’m a recovering addict, 10 years sober from crack cocaine and pain pills. I battled addiction for years as a teen. I ended up getting arrested my second time in 2012 and was placed in a treatment center where a week in I found out I was pregnant. I knew it wasn’t just me I would be hurting if I used, I would be hurting my unborn child. So I completed my 6 month treatment and went on to have my daughter Arianna. I started playing music throughout the years which led me to go live on an app called “Periscope”. We’ve built up a large fan base on there with over 14k followers. I decided to try out for Americas Got Talent Front Of The Line Contest in 2017 and won with 48,000 votes. I ended up meeting a man named Mike Letica on Periscope who is a business man from Duluth MN. He heard my story and wanted me to come to Duluth to speak at schools, detention centers and rehab centers out there. Which we did and the impact we made out there was truly incredible. Mike has been a huge help in developing and managing my career. He officially became my manager and has been managing my career ever since. In 2019 we had the opportunity to go to Capitol Records in Hollywood and record with Grammy Nominated producer Nathan Walters. In 2021 we started working with Grammy Nominated producer, vocal coach and Georgia Music Hall Of Fame Inductee Mama Jan. Vocal coach of Justin Bieber, Usher, Nicki Minaj etc. She has taken my vocals to another level the past few years. Teaching me proper technique and vocal care. Fast forward to now I’m currently working on my album “Destiny” which will be out later this year. So stay tuned.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I think over the years I’ve had to battle through people who didn’t believe in me. I was working crazy hard hours but making little money in the very beginning and I had people who just wanted me to give up. This is my purpose, this is EVERYTHING to me. I’m a full time mom and artist. With being an independent artist comes: content creating, making music, photo shoots, video shoots, marketing, promoting, live shows etc on top of being a full time mom it’s ALOT. Being an artist isn’t just I sing on stage and get paid. A lot is put in to making it all happen. So I’ve learned some people who aren’t creatives will always bash you for your work and what you do. The most important thing is are you happy? Do you have a plan? Are you making money to pay your bills? Than what they think truly doesn’t matter. Be creative, do what you love, do what makes you happy and inspire as many as you can.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding thing for me is truly the impact of my music and story. After some of my speaking’s I have kids and people coming up to me in tears telling me there story’s. When people hear my music, can connect with it but enjoy it and really let it inspire you that’s the most rewarding thing. In a world where it can be so dark I choose to be that light and hearing about how I’ve helped others in there dark times is truly why I do what I do.
