We were lucky to catch up with Jared Sampson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jared, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I started working with my dad building wooden gliders when I was about five years old, and we eventually completed several projects together. Learning to make things with him was a confidence builder, and got me interested in the craft. Once I moved into a house, I quickly found the “maker” passion again as an adult. Once I acquired more tools I began making simple projects like American flags, and eventually experimented with epoxy resin – that led me to where I am now, honestly. Knowing what I know now, I would have taken a risk with epoxy much earlier – experimenting by myself was a bit costly, but once I figured it out, my business changed for the better.
As far as the skills that are essential for what I do, I’d say patience is number one – trying to rush things doesn’t produce quality products, and I’m a stickler for quality.
Woodworking is something that requires constant practice, and having a family while also going to school recently has reduced the amount of time I can spend in the shop – but I will always find time to spend in the shop!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Jared, and I own and operate Sampson Woodcrafting LLC. I began in my garage making simple projects for friends and family on the side, and eventually found that I could sell what I made. I was not successful at first, and honestly was a bit discouraged, but I never quit.
I actually decided to register my business as an LLC in September of 2019, which was unfortunately awful timing with the COVID pandemic beginning just months afterward. I continued to make things for myself and friends, and in January of 2022 I was commissioned to make a complete desk for a local business, which allowed me the opportunity to showcase my talent.
Sampson Woodcrafting LLC is a custom woodworking business that specializes in functional art. I belong to a network of craftsmen that affords me the opportunity to allow customers to hand pick the wood slab(s) for their project from a large assortment of cataloged and kiln dried lumber. Making the project personal for the customer is important to me. I have made dining tables, coffee tables, entryway tables, shoe organizers, closet organizers, shelves, built-in cabinets and much, much more.
I take great pride in my work, and make every effort to craft every custom piece I produce into something that will not only “wow” and satisfy the requirements of the customer, but will likely last their lifetime.
I was commissioned to build and deliver 14 custom epoxy tables for a restaurant in the Museum District of Houston called City Cellars HTX. I have to pinch myself sometimes knowing that my tables are on display in a restaurant, and that people are using them every day!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I get a great sense of satisfaction from making beautiful things. When I am able to deliver something I made to someone else, it’s sort of my way of sharing my soul – I don’t know how else to describe it. That is the most rewarding part of what I do,
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I have a few craftsmen that I aspire to be like, but everyone does things differently. My goal is to be successful enough at what I do that it would allow me to craft full time and support my family.
Honestly I just want to share with the world the beauty that I find in wood, and to create truly unique pieces for truly unique people.
