We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Joela Tate a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Joela, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Alright, so one thing we think people don’t talk about nearly enough is investments – either time or money. What’s one of the best or worst investments you’ve made and what did you learned from the experience?
My dream was to become a nurse and eventually open my own home health agency. I acquired several hours of education through college courses even gaining accreditation in a few certifications in the medical field. However my biggest adversities were a lack of flexibility and trying to manage being a full time student all while possessing the title of a dedicated wife and mother. As I maneuvered through the years and eventually recognizing my calling I accepted being in the kitchen was one of my best qualities. I grew obsessed with creating and designing desserts which later evolved to baking and decorating cakes for my family and local neighborhood friends. Before I knew it I was offering party services including ballon decor, party rentals and event production setups. My biggest investment I would have to say would be the time and energy I invested into my creativity. I learned things about myself I had no idea I could do. Once I realized the talents I possessed I reconstructed my aspirations and directed my attention on my gift to then focus on becoming a business owner.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Ive worked pretty much all my life in providing some form of customer service. So once I became a household name in my community, the transition became evident to start operating as a small business owner. From selling pecan candy to dipping chocolate sweets I had no choice but to identify myself as a self taught artist. From participating in pop up shops to providing event set ups for book signings, comedy shows, baby showers, wedding cakes, and offering cake decorating classes, you name it, Mommy Touch by Joela was in the building!
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I fund my business by simply reinvesting my profits back into my business. I allow my business to pay for itself. I take the initiative to research business resources and strategies, learning how to establish and build a solid business profile also manage credit solutions. My goal is to master the benefits of acquiring business funding to operate on a larger scale in the near future.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
As a business owner I place huge emphasize on quality and presentation. I believe in offering a five star experience to all my existing, returning and potential clients. Most of my clientele are based off of returning customers and referrals. I believe in keeping a professional yet personal relationship with my customers. Building this type of relationship offers them security and confidence that I have their best interest at heart whether that’s related to budget or their feelings of being overwhelmed with planning for the occasion. If I can deliver assurance, then will I receive their trust in return. I’ve also been told I have the tendency to go over and beyond to meet my clients expectations even if it means their vision may exceed their budget but for me, I’m simply doing what I love to do!
