Job postings. Historically, these postings were used to keep people out. Now we are using them to invite people in but we are using biased tactics that keep underserved communities from applying.
Kat, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I teach people how to write job postings. I spent over 15 years working in the HR and recruiting industry and I never met a writer. That’s a problem because out of all the problems we can actually address in hiring, how we ask is the one everyone can do but no one knows how.
I learned how to write job postings by interviewing and writing over a thousand job postings. There’s a funny story behind this one…
I also make sure that every tactic is created with equity in mind. I want to open the door for everyone to have the job they dream about.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
There are no rules for how we work. You don’t have to login at a certain time. You don’t have to put in a certain amount of hours to be successful. None of it. I learned that by selling everything I own and traveling the country for a year in a van.
Can you share one of your favorite marketing or sales stories?
I was invited to speak at a webinar about job postings and I didn’t know anything about job postings. I spent weeks researching and got so invested that I decided to offer to write them for free. Over 1,000 people contacted me that day and it was the beginning of everything that I do in my business.
