We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ja’Michael Breckenridge . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ja’Michael below.
Alright, Ja’Michael thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry? Any stories or anecdotes that illustrate why this matters?
I think the one thing Corporate America gets wrong in the apparel industry is the requirement of education. I feel like you don’t necessarily need a further education to be creative. If you’re creative, then you’re creative. You just have to figure out what particular skill in the industry could you put your creative skills to. It could be graphics, pattern-making, etc. You just have to figure it out.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Well, the way I got into the apparel industry, streetwear to be exact, was that I was so tired of going shopping every other weekend and seeing stuff I wasn’t really feeling. I’ve always been a fan of graphic tees. I’ve always been a fan of crewneck sweatshirts, polo shirts, leather jackets, just “cool” apparel. And I would go to these stores and not really dig anything I would see. So my thing is, if it’s something you want to change about something, then change it. And from there M.Y.H.M was born.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Well, the biggest transition I’ve experienced so far was quitting my 9-5 job to fully focus on the company. Quitting your 9-5 is a HUGE risk to take. But it was honestly one of the best decisions I ever made in my life. I used to didn’t like the word “entrepreneur”. Really because it was a word thrown around so loosely. But once I made the transition to the full-time, entrepreneur grind, the word just became glued to my vocabulary.
How did you build your audience on social media?
The main way I’ve been able to build the M.Y.H.M social media presence, is by actually getting on my feet, meeting people personally, and exchanging the info with them myself. It could be going to different events and setting up shop to sell to the general public, seeing people in passing, just the whole nine. If the opportunity presents itself, then take it. Doing this really keeps on my feet with the brand and you’ll feel like you’re just step closer.
