We were lucky to catch up with Dezy Jackson Hughes recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dezy, thanks for joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
I’ve always wanted to be different from others in my industry! But I also wanted to have a business name that represented me and my mother! Classy is what my mother was and taught me to be “ be a lady and classy at all times” is what she would say! And I try to exude “Classy” in everything within my business so my clients can understand what “Classy face by Dezy” is all about.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Dezy Jackson Hughes and I am the owner of Classy Face by Dezy! I am a business woman who’s also an accomplished professional makeup artist. While I have completed many projects on sets of commercials, television specials, and movies, my absolute favorite engagement of all time to accept are bridal glam/wedding glam engagements. I love being involved in my clients special day and being more than just their artist! What I’m most proud of since moving to Atlanta are the goals I’ve set for my business and ventures I’m currently accomplishing, whether it seems small or substantial. It hasn’t been easy, but it’s been so worth it! I never compare myself to other artists simply because I feel every artist is unique and great in their own right. I believe in making sure my clients know “I’m not making you beautiful…I’m enhancing the beauty you already have.” I believe beauty starts before the stroke of the brush.
I’ve been connected with makeup my whole life and honestly I never liked it until I became an adult! My mother loved everything associated with beauty and I watched her over the years wear it daily, but I couldn’t wear it like she did… everyday. One day I decided to get my makeup professionally done for my 26th birthday and I loved the way I looked in it and how beautiful I felt! From that moment I knew if I applied myself in learning how to apply makeup and develop the consistency to learn about the products as well, I could become a makeup artist on my own. After wearing makeup I applied on my own self for a while, people started to ask me to apply their makeup and I absolutely loved applying others’ makeup more than my own! I love how people feel afterwards and knowing that I was instrumental in giving them that feeling! I’ve been a makeup artist for about 5 years now with 3 of these years working as a professional.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The biggest lesson I’ve earned so far is, NEVER compare your journey to whose you see on social media! When I first started I wanted success like all the other makeup artist I followed at the time had! Not realizing in those moments what it took for them to get to that level of success in their life. Not knowing the good days or bad days that they had to endure. What they had to sacrificed to get there,. How hard they worked . What steps they took to get to that point. I didn’t think about any of it I just knew I wanted to be successful like right then and there, because I knew I had it in me, BUT I quickly remembered success is not over night! And their journey is not my journey! And while I’m destined for greatness and success I have to put in time and work and be the best version of myself so when it’s my moment I will know how to take it all in! I had to unlearn the “ I want it all right now “ mentality and realize when God was ready and felt I was it would happen!

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
My family and I moved from California to Atlanta just so I could follow my dreams! Having to make drastic life decisions for my kids and husband definitely wasn’t easy but they are my biggest supporters so they understood and adapted! Was the change easy? No, but I have dreams and goals and I needed to start somewhere fresh! And God has been faithful to me, my family and my Business! Even when I wanted to put my brushes down and not deal with any of it I remembered how strong I was and that every successful person has a journey and it had to start somewhere. Even in a overly saturated Industry, I belong in it and I’m not going to stop doing what I love! I’m going to keep going after my dreams one by one because success doesn’t stop with the brush, There’s more!
