Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to WILLIAM REEVES. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
WILLIAM, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
I worked in higher end professional kitchens for quite a while. Family Meal is the love child of my passion for food and cooking, combined with my lifelong affection for skateboarding. The unofficial definition for a “family meal” in a professional restaurant is a meal provided by the restaurant for the entire staff, typically prior to the start of service. The meal is normally made by a member of the kitchen staff with products that may not make it on the restaurants menu which helps utilize food, and prevent food waste.
Eating with others can form a sense of comradery, which is what I miss most about working in a kitchen (besides the creativity).
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
By trade, I am a professional leather craftsman. I still have my handmade custom leather company Quiet Leather Works, but that is not what this interview is about. My new business launching February 1st 2023. Family Meal is a headwear focused clothing brand. It started with the idea of throwing our love of skateboarding and the aesthetic that comes along with it into a mixing bowl, and tossing in our experience of cooking in professional kitchens and passion for food.
I have been skateboarding since I was around 13 and I have always loved the general aesthetics that comes along with skateboard culture. The board graphics, the clothing, the creativity, and the lessons it teaches you. When you fall, you get back up and try it again, and again, and again. We want to cross that aesthetic with heavy influence from the culinary arts and just simple food in general.
A lot of skateboarders work in bars and restaurants. They can skate all day, and not have to clock in until 4pm or later most of the time, which would be just around the time family meal would be served if the restaurant supplies it. It works well for the lifestyle.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I funded my business with very little money straight from my own pocket. It is probably a lot less than what most people would even assume. I really thing you can start a LOT of businesses with very little capital. The downside of that, is you might need to grow your business slower, but honestly I find taking it slower is fun and more rewarding. Many people could take a million dollars and pay some celebrity to use their product on social media and things start blowing up immediately. It is far more of a challenge to start with nothing and grow it organically.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Honestly I barely have any social media presence for Family Meal, because at the time of this interview, we have not launched yet. Hopefully this interview will help that. I am spending quite a bit of time trying to build the presence of Family Meal on social media and I find that consistency is the best piece of advice I would give to anyone, but I am by no stretch a social media expert. I am actually not great at it but I understand that, and I am trying to improve every day.
