Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sharmim Nansubuga. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Sharmim thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Starting a business was never my goal for me in the beginning. I was solely focused on solving my own problem: hair breakage and damage that drove me into depression. Unexpectedly, I learned that the harm was as a result of the dangerous substances present in the products I was using at the time. I challenged myself to conduct research with the sole aim of determining the cause of the damage. I started by purchasing one carrier oil from a local store for $9.99 that I had done some research on and couldn’t wait to give a try. Then I went ahead to purchase more oils and raw butters after I was happy with the results.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Sharm Naturals is a Black-owned and woman-founded natural hair product line formulated for women of color who have experienced hair damage and are now looking for a natural solution. I was headed to a beauty store to acquire some hair products with the sole purpose of enhancing the appearance of my hair. Much to my despair, hair breakage and damage was the outcome. The emotional toll I had to weather prompted me to carry out more research on the particular ingredients found in these products that I had previously used, and alas, they were all toxic and detrimental to one’s hair growth and development. Throughout my discovery, I started building up ideas in my head and carried out research in pursuit of substituting toxic substances for organic ones. That’s when I started making my own products. I do immensely credit my friends who shared their gruesome experiences of hair damage too from toxic hair products and it was through their sharing that launched Sharm Naturals to life. The positive feedback that I continue to receive from my customers is something that I pray never get used to.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
When I first started, building a business was never my intention. I was only thinking about how to address my own issue with damaged and broken hair. I began by spending $9.99 on a single carrier oil from a local store after doing some research because I was eager to give it a try. Once I was satisfied with the outcomes, I moved on to buy more oils and butter. I have kept funding my then passion ever since.
Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
All of Sharm Naturals products are handmade by me. I pursued further to understand how to create the products, and after many trial-and-error and sleepless nights, I eventually came up with recipes that I eventually developed formulas that I would continuously adjust based on the usage and consistency.
