We recently connected with Kenzie Perez and have shared our conversation below.
Kenzie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
Fresh Cosmetic Studio was a vision/dream of mine to create a safe space where clients would feel comfortable & confident with our artist, & where artist could work in a space that was focused on artistry & skill, positive energy & growing in their craft. I started my career in tattoo shops across Austin & New Orleans, my hometown. After building my clientele over the years, I felt Austin was lacking in a ‘cosmetic tattoo focused’ studio. I wanted a space that clients would feel at ease and relaxed in. We aren’t a tattoo shop, a med-spa, or a salon–we fit somewhere in the middle of all of these. The aesthetic of the studio reels clients in, but our passion & artistry always brings clients back. The vision for the studio was a modern twist to the 60s & 70s era & a celebration of my love of tattoo history & culture. It wasn’t an easy road building this business, but I am super proud of what I was able to accomplish so far.

Kenzie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Kenzie Perez & I’m a cosmetic tattooer! I started my career in early 2017, after being a make up artist for years. It was a natural progression into the PMU field. I create natural enhanced beauty by tattooing eyebrows, lips, or freckles on my clients. I like to call my work an ‘optical illusion’ because you truly cannot tell it’s a tattoo! What sets me apart is my history working at tattoo shops & the years I’ve dedicated to my craft. I’m about to reach 6 years in this career field. I opened my studio, Fresh Cosmetic Studio in 2021 and since I’ve started training other potential cosmetic tattooers & continuing to build my clientele base. I just reached 1000 clients tattooed (yay!) & I was invited to the Austin Tattoo Invitational in September 23′, being the only cosmetic tattooer/studio in Austin invited to attend. Needless to say, I’m absolutely honored & excited to continue growing & expanding my business.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think being consistent with my work, treating clients with the upmost respect, & working really, really hard the first few years of my career established the ground work to keep me busy & booked up weeks in advance. Social media has also opened a gateway in my career field to expand & reach people from all over the country to view my art. A lot of my new clients that I meet say that they found me via a friend or family member that I tattooed, or from a social media post online.
How did you build your audience on social media?
To be honest, I don’t feel like social media is as easy for me as other people. I usually try to post frequently & not over-think the post I’m about to make. I feel as artist, we get in our heads about “creating the perfect content”, but I say if you’re proud of whatever you’re going to post, don’t let a certain number of likes or comments make you feel differently about it. As long as you’re proud of the work you’re creating & you’re posting authentically, that’s all that matters. Most of the time, the post that I don’t like as much will get more attention than a post I’m really proud of. My biggest advice, don’t let social media dictate your worth.
