Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ryan Kovacs. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Ryan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
My most meaningful writing project thus far has been the novels in my upcoming Destruction Series: Create Destruction and Destroy Creation. They were originally supposed to be a writing prompt for a friend of mine and myself over a decade ago where we would each write a story about the duality with hopes of creating a graphic novel. I wrote my short story, Create Destruction and was amazed at the idea I’d come up with. Sadly my friend never wrote his writing prompt for Destroy Creation and the idea more so just sat in a writing folder. It wasn’t until after I published my first novel, The N.M.E. that I realized I had an idea for a great story that I wanted to have a message for my children. I knew how I wanted both stories to end and the overall message and themes to be choice and consequences. They are two ideals that create their own duality and follow a character, Thomas, with who I believe is a relatable character both as an adolescent and adult with his internal struggles and thoughts. I wrote this series in hopes of teaching many lessons, some of the most valuable to me, to my children and readers alike. It may seem unorthodox to attempt to teach such important lessons through torture and violence such as Thomas’ character endures. However, I believe we should welcome trials over tragedies and recognize the power of our choices. A wise man once told me, “where we are in life is a direct reflection of the choices we’ve made or failed to make.” I live by those words and acknowledge their importance in this series.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I think a defining characteristic with my writing is my risk taking. At the core of me, I’m a poet that loves to tell stories. I never really fancied traditional prose from a writing standpoint. It wasn’t until I discovered novels written in verse that I found my unique way of telling stories. Of course, I didn’t just stop there with my first novel-in-verse and took it a few steps further. I wrote the entire novel in the first and second person, breaking the fourth wall with my character’s narrative. The icing on the cake is that it’s entirely written in a southern accent. I chose to take these risks for numerous reasons. First and foremost to be original. Secondly, to tell a revenge tale through the voice and mind of a deranged killer that would keep my readers on the edge of their seat. Lastly, I wanted the story and the style to stand out. So many of the reviews on Amazon and fans have said they didn’t expect to enjoy the style of writing as much as they did. The compelling story was a bonus I suppose haha. I follow a similar trend with my Destruction Series novels, shedding light on some of life’s controversial and complicated questions. I’m all about originality at the end of the day and apart from the stories I tell, the way in which I tell them should be equally if not more unique.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I think the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the feedback. I thrive off constructive criticism and am always looking for new ways to improve my writing and story telling. All creative arts are subjective, so I understand not everyone who reads my work are going to enjoy the content or the style and I respect that. I take into consideration what marks I missed with some groups to improve and try even harder to enhance and expand on the things that resonated with those who enjoyed my works. I’m a realist and understand that it’s not possible to please everyone but sometimes we have to take that step back and ask if we are pleased with our own works and the message we are sharing. That’s self-fulfillment and humility at the core and it’s what I strive to achieve and express daily in my writings and my beliefs.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
It’s so funny to ask this question at this juncture in my life. Ten years ago the answer to this question would’ve been that I was writing as a hobby and for myself. Now I think I’ve really tackled this as a potential career. Not saying I have expectations of being the next best-selling author (although I’m not going to complain if it happens haha), but I think I have potential to be a valued writer in the literary community. Of course, I couldn’t be where I am in the beginning of my career without proper support from family and friends and a small growing fanbase. The drive to continue to give people another good read or compelling story because they actually ask for it from me is humbling and exciting at the same time. It’s probably safe to say that with one published novel and two more on the way and a few on the back burner, I have some stories that I hope will continue to surprise, question and beg to know what happens next in the future. This journey is just the beginning and I can’t wait to see what it has in store for me.
