Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mykel Darrough. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Mykel thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
To go from idea to execution was a major step in the process to where I am today. It is very important because it’s in this process you find out the possibility of making your dream a reality. In the process of creating Truly Grand Sports Promotions in 2015 I went through the figure it out process. I had to understand what were the needs in the sports industry and where could I fit in. I started by sponsoring professional athletes to develop a relationship with the client. Murjan Flowers (Pro MMA Fighter out of Michigan) was my first ever client and we never looked back.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Myke Darrough and I would like to believe I didn’t choose the sports industry it chose me. My uncle Tim Littles was a professional boxer in the 90s and he took me around the industry very early. At the early age of 5 I was surrounded by some of boxings greats such as Pernell Whitaker and Evander Holyfield. After playing sports through out my childhood and teen years I developed a passion for the business side of sports. In 2015 I launched Truly Grand Sports Promotions. I am proud that I became the youngest franchise owner of a sports organization in the U.S in 2016 by purchasing my first minor league basketball franchise (Vehicle City Royals). As of today we serve as a one stop shop in the sports industry from management, product distribution, advisory, live event, web3 development, business development, live events, we have managed to become a high priority inside the business of sports. This spring we will be launching a new software app titled (Only Legendz), Only Legendz is a digital platform designed to give athletes equal opportunity with NIL deals.
We’d love to hear about you met your business partner.
I met my business partner Joshua Gumbiner after over a 8 year history with his family in business (aunt Cathy Gumbiner) I was introduced to Joshua prior to our business on a call for another industry. Joshua was new to the sports management side of business but carried a strong presence in the marketing and business development space. Me and Josh had a lot of common goals and felt that with our talents put together we could make a big splash in this industry. Today we serve on multiple boards together as well as multiple advisory contracts together through Triumph enterprise.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I believe what helped build my reputation in the market was being hands on in every community we impacted. I say this because if you don’t have boots on the ground how do you connect with your consumers. From creating opportunities for the youth through programs, to being a advocate for equal rights, I feel my reputation was built on being accessible to the community and being able to create opportunities help build the support system we have today at Truly Grand Sports.
