We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Myles Brown a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Myles, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Well first things first, I was got my education for visual arts at Longleaf School of the Arts. It’s a school that is located in Raleigh, North Carolina. The school’s mission is to teach students how to use traditional art mediums as well as educate people about other forms of art too. It does it very well.
Another thing I wanted to share is that I also am a part of my school’s literary magazine club called The Wake Review. It’s Wake Technical Community College’s school literary magazine and club. The mission for the Wake Review is to provide a creative outlet for students, faculty, and staff that go or work at Wake Technical College. Every issue that has been made is fantastic. My personal favorite is the 2022 version.
I also design flyers for the Wake Review when I am not working with clients, completing orders, or doing schoolwork. It provides such good practice for me.
Myles, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Myles Brown, and I am a content creator from North Carolina. I have loved art since participating in my first art exhibition at the Cary Town Mall during elementary school. My career didn’t start right away as I dabbled in music until high school, but in college returned to my love of art, which is influenced by comic books like Iron Man and anime like Dragon Ball Z and My Hero Academia. The inspiration for my work comes from learning how to make art that resonates with people without really having to sacrifice my own ideas.
My work is well-known for its nature inspired art style. This led me to create art and sell it as well as design content for clients to purchase all over the Americas and Europe. The inspiration for my work came from being able to learn how to make art that resonates with people emotionally without really having to sacrifice my ideas because of my experiences with streetwear company ArtsFighters and musicians such as TK Master.
One thing that I contribute to my success is getting to really know the people of North Carolina and learn why they love art so much. Building connections is so important. It’s what keeps our creative juices flowing.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
One of the most rewarding aspects of being an artist is getting to travel and make new connections. My favorite moment thus far would probably be the time I traveled to New Bern to have an art show at The Next Chapter Books and Arts bookstore that resides. It’s such a beautiful store in such a beautiful city. The owner and her contributions to not only my business, but New Bern as a whole cannot be understated. It’s an amazing place to begin investing time into the arts.
Another example I can bring up really fast is the first time I showed my art in the Pancake and Booze Art Show. It was my first time being a part of a venue that really captured what Raleigh is all about. Bring people together as well as getting people to really get crafty.
One more thing that is rewarding is learning how to constantly innovative and evolve my craft. That was my favorite lesson that I learned at Longleaf School of the Arts. Being able to evolve your craft will introduce you to so many new perspectives you would have never thought about prior.
It’s hard to name one rewarding aspect honestly but traveling as well as getting too innovative as much as possible. That is the rewarding part.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal as an artist is to not only be myself, but to encourage others that it is ok to be yourself as well. By using my love of nature and mythology, I am able to express myself in ways that I really would not be able to if I were to just rely on realism all of the time.
Another thing is to really grow as a person. Art has helped me through many trials and tribulations. I wouldn’t even know what to do without it. When I’m feeling sad, I create. When I’m feeling angry, I create. When I have something on my mind I can’t get out, I create. Art has always been my best friend, and it will never leave me by any means.
I also want to make my family, friends, and clients proud. That’s another reason as to why I create every day. One drawing a day will always keep me motivated. There’s never been a day in my life where I have not felt the need to create.
