We recently connected with Xi Chen and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Xi thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
I never regret life. Never made a “IF” in my life, every moment for me is a part of my life. I appreciated each of them, either the good part or the bad. They are my experience, which pushes me to grow in the other way. I remember I heard someone make a metaphor, which is each person’s life is like a blossoming flower, some blossom in early time, and some are late. So don’t compare yourself with others, just be yourself. For example, I love my design and enjoy using design to enhance visual communication. But I chose to study oversea when I was 36. Some people feel it was too late to make this big change in the life. But for me, never too late to start the dream. So when I was 36, I gave up everything, took two large cases with me, and came to the U.S. to start my dream. And I made it. I graduated from SCAD and got my MFA degree on March 2022. And I got a job in the U.S. I never regret it should start early in my life. However, I feel everything is the best arrangement for me. After several years, I am more clear about what I want to do in my design career. So I become sharper and more targeted on my design journey.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I love drawing when I was a child. I am an emotional person. So maybe at that time, I prefer to use color and shape or lines to express my feeling. So I chose art school to have a systematic study in the design field. And I enjoy using visual ways to improve the world better. We don’t have to talk too much, through visuals, could bring more powerful things to others. When I see my client are excited about the new branding things I made for them, which help them to enhance their communication what the public, I feel so happy and achieved. I feel my value and power. And I have an idea that wants to create my personal business, through some handcraft things to bing a piece of warm and joy to people.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I think it is an observation from life. The artist who became famous all belong to a deep understanding of life and carefully observe life. So they could have a unique perspective on life statements to bring to the art. The deeper observation, the more meaning is reflected in the art, Therefore, the creative is not ” Fancy” or ” Beauty” for me, it is an artist after several years of feeling and observation of life reflects on the work. There is no shortcut way to becoming creative. It is a long journey to the self-polish process.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
With the heart to feel, to see, to hear, to do, always keep an open mind to explore new things.
