Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Yama Six. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Yama, thanks for joining us today. Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
Main thing we get misunderstood is always our gender and sexual orientation. The name is a play on just that so I somewhat use it as a gauge and conversation starter for potential fans and seasoned fans to interact. I myself (yama) do not identify as “they” or “them” however I do support those within the LBTQ+ communities. Our name Theyamasexuals is meant to sound like they am a sexual as well as holds a deeper meaning. I do feel as though it is one of the more creative parts of my artistry in terms of how well put together and how many layers there are to it. I truly wanted to make the name and universe I create in general to be a “if you know you know” type of group in terms of information and exclusivity. Yama is also the deity of death in some cultures and also is a form of yoga which entails how the group and our fan base interacts and governs itself as a whole. The Yamas and Niyamas are patterns of thought and actions to indulge or refrain from in order to be one’s whole self. I enjoy the duality of the names and combing it with They and sexual to me gave it universal appeal. While it is something I will always have to deal with, it is a necessary and welcoming conversation to start with new people. Lastly I chose the name for creatives I work with who may want to remain anonymous, which includes myself. I would like the name to stand for anyone who stands with me.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
What’s up Lovers, I’m The Yamasexuals also go by Yama Six. Music has always been apart of my life, I began making beats and learning instruments at a young age and took classes in elementary and middle school. I now write and produce music for myself and others and am starting my journey into fashion soon as well. I look to provide creative directing services, writing and production, as well as modeling and acting to any of my friends and peers. We look to bring creativity and personal aesthetics to the field without compromising any integrity. I think this is also in part what sets myself and company in its own field at times. Our attention to detail as well as execution brings a fresh air of creativity to the space that we look to make the standard for our friends and family. I’m most proud of the inspiration and support I’ve given and received from everyone who has been apart of my journey so far and will continue. Most of all in combination with the last interview I want our people to know we hear them, see them, and support and love them. We will continue to be a beacon of hope and creativity as well as a notion for “you can do it too”.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A big lesson I had to unlearn was trying to do everything on my own. Being a artist a lot of times you don’t have a lot of money to pay different creatives to help bring your vision together, but in my opinion it is more beneficial than learning all parts of your process and then getting to a quality level you’re happy with, which is going to take some time. Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying be one dimensional but being a jack of all trades trying to create your project is an uphill battle. I’ve learned allowing others the space to not only help but to teach you when working together makes the projects more enjoyable for both parties. From the outside perspective it also seems as though the project is bigger than me or anyone I worked with. Which it is. Community drives music as well as many other fields I’m involved in. On the other hand only being able to offer one skill sometime can backfire on you as well as an artists within a community. I like to have someone I can learn from, someone I can teach, and someone who’s even with me in terms of skill so that I can grow within the community. Prior I felt as though communities where everyone was in the same field could get crabby and in the past some have but I wasn’t treating this like something I loved. I needed to dust myself off and get back out there and make valuable relationships not only for music but because we’re actually friends. I think alot of times the lines can get blurred within these spaces and I want to remain as genuine and helpful as possible. Advancement comes from real relationships and benefits as well not just business relationship or paper friends. All that being said I had to learn to lose some control in order to gain it all back again.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is inspiring others to do their thing. The feeling never gets old and always reciprocates. Having someone start a project or pivot in life or just take a chance on something they love because they see how much joy you get from doing what you love is amazing. I feel like it’s the perfect way to be immortalized. Giving someone life. This world and its challenges gets to everyone at some point and if sharing apart of my journey brings someone peace or to a better mindset I can’t really ask for much else. The random messages, calls, shoutouts and even the subtle changes that people have when encountering my art is a blessing, and makes the challenges of being a creative worth it. While it isn’t much now I hope to expand my reach and continue to bring my wave to the people and help everyone I can get closer to themselves.
