We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Karmen Scott. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Karmen below.
Hi Karmen, thanks for joining us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
You know, my parents did what I pray I do for my two babies. They always taught my siblings and me to pursue our passions and our dreams. They never forced anything on us and they didn’t just tell us, but they showed us. I remember being in elementary school doing homework with my mom. Like actually sitting and doing our homework together because she decided to go back to school to pursure a career in cosmetology as she’d always wanted to. And then, in high school, my dad and I graduated the same year. Right before I graduated my senior year, he received his degree and I was so proud. My parents did what they needed to do to provide for our family but they never gave up and that is what I always keep in my mind when I set a goal to achieve something that’s in my heart. Never give up no matter how long it takes.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am an author and blogger. I started my blog, Child of Purpose, on WordPress back in 2016. My blogging was inspired by my desire to want to help people who read it know that they are not alone in anything they may be going through. When I first started, it was more so geared toward college students, but now that I am married with two little ones, my writing has changed and so has my desired audience. So, I now write about the challenges I face as a wife and mother. I also published my first novel, Inexperienced, back in December 2020 thanks to my husband. He believes in my craft and decided to have my book published as a Christmas gift and I am forever grateful to him for that. I plan to publish the sequel, Over-Experienced sometime this year so be on the lookout for that.
Lastly, I plan to turn Child of Purpose into a brand. I feel that there is so much more that God wants me to do with this beyond writing. I feel as if I am called to help other women that may face many challenges in motherhood and being wives. I’m not entirely sure what that will be just yet, but just know that this is something I am working towards.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Right now my main goal is to help people. I used to think that writing was the main goal. But now I’m a published author and while my writing helps others, I recently realized that there are other ways I can help others. Recently I started utilizing my social media account more and I started making videos of encouragement that I felt could reach different people whether they follow me or not. So, right now, I am focusing on the goal of being versatile in reaching people beyond the blog.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect for me is strangers messaging me or commenting on my videos and blog posts telling me “thank you”. This means the world to me because it encourages me in the moments when I’m feeling discouraged. This is not always easy. Sometimes I feel like I’m missing the mark or I’m doing what I do for nothing. But I’m learning that as long as I can reach and help one person, I’m doing the right thing. That’s all that matters to me.
